How To Control Windows Updates?

P

(PeteCresswell)

I *think* I've got the Windows Update manager set to only notify
me and not automatically install.

But it keeps on installing at the most maddening times. As a
sometime developer, I often want to re-boot in the midst of
something and it always seems like when I'm under the gun,
Windows Update kicks in with something like "Installing 7
Updates...." when I want a quick re-boot.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is this just the way it is?

I just turn the manager off, and do updates when I want to.

The annoying thing is the stupid wanring that tell me it is set exactly the way
I want it to be. Anyone have a clue how to eliminate those warnings?

The Windows Update options are labeled quite clearly, so it doesn't
seem likely that you've made a mistake. Which option did you choose?
It seems like you want either "Download and Notify" or "Notify without
Downloading".

If updates are pending when you want to shut down or reboot, I believe
the default is to install them, but I also believe there's a clickable
option on the shutdown dialog that allows you to skip the updates. Do
you see that?

It doesn't have to be the way you described...

Here's what I had it when I wrote the OP:

I just changed it to "Notify me, but don't automatically download
or install them".

Yes, now I see it. "In the fine print, so-to-speak":

Thanks for that one!!!!...

But the text there seems to conflict with the option I specified
in Windows Updates.... go figure....

Cool, glad it helped.

You sort of have to live with that. Even though you've said you want
to specify when updates will be installed, Windows thinks during
shutdown or restart is an excellent time to step in and take care of
it. You have to use the fine print if you don't agree.

What is the setting to get that fine print to show up? I have XP Pro
SP3 and that little option does not show up on my shutdown pop-up.

To the best of my knowledge, it shows up automatically when there are
updates pending. No updates, no fine print.

I was going to agree with Char until about 3 boots ago - when I'm
99% sure I saw it come-and-go briefly. It's back now, but for
at least 2 reboots the fine print was not showing up.

Is that because there were no updates to install?
