Automatic Restart Question

I've been having problems with my video driver that I downloaded from
Nvidea's
web site after installing xp on a clean hard drive. The problem occurred
twice. The
first time I had disabled the Automatic Restart and was presented with the
BSOD
and xp identified the dll that was the culprit. The second time it happened
I left the
Automatic restart enabled and the computer would restart or it would totally
stop
responding. This second time Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP was
kind enough to check a log file for me and tell me that it identified the
same dll that
was causing the problem the first time. My question now is how should I set
the
Automatic Restart. Seems to be a bit easier identifying the problem by
leaving it
disabled and triggering the BSOD.

Thanks,
James

James, yes leave the Auto Restart disabled. Did you try www.guru3d.com
for a different video driver? If you have an
older graphics card stick with the older drivers. For example, I have a
GF3-Ti-200 and can't use any newer drivers than
the 30.XX series.

I purchased my machine on 01/13/04. I know when I installed xp
I was initially unable to get a resolution over 1024 x 768. It appears in
both
times I hade trouble with the driver it was the same file. nv4_disp.dll.
I reinstalled the driver today so the same thing will probably happen
(although it hasn't happened yet.)
Will guru3d.com analyze my system and make any suggestions?? I'm at a loss
to know which driver to use other than the NVIDIA driver.

Thanks for the help,
James

James, do you have a Nvidia Graphic Chip ( Integrated graphics ) or a
separate Nvidia Graphics Card. Either way let me
know which it is and what Model. Guru3d has a wide range of Nvidia
graphic drivers from the very current to back a couple of years.

As far as Nvidia Graphic Chip I'm not sure. Not even sure if it should be
one or the other but, my Graphics Card is Nvidia and reads:
e-GeForce FX 5200, 128 mb, Model P162. When I
boot up the very first line is: GeForce FX 5200.
The driver version is 6.6.9.3 and the driver Date is 10/29/04.
I'm not sure if this is too much information but there it is.
If any more info is required let me know.
Also I when it was giving me problems xp seemed like it wouldn't roll
back the driver. It kept presenting me with the troubleshooting wizard.
(There probably wasn't anything to roll back to?!).
One more thing. Both problems was with nv4_disp.dll.

Thanks,
James
