Automatic Logout Problem

John

I have an OEM copy of Windows XP Home installed on my HP
system. When I turn on my system, instead of it bringing
up my desktop as normally does, it would bring me to the
Windows XP Login screen where you must click on which user
you are (in this case it says "Owner"). When I click
on "Owner" it tells me it is loading my profile and
instead of bringing me to my desktop, it automatically
logs out and brings me back to square one (the login
screen once again).

I have tried starting up in Safe Mode, but the same
problem occurs, but this time with two options as a
login, "Owner", or "Administrator". Both options have the
same result. Any ideas of of how to get to my desktop
without it logging out automatically? If the system
recovery cd is used, will it wipe out my hard drive? LEt
me know. thanks!

This issue can occur if the c:\ drive letter somehow got changed. Were you
adding or removing drives to the system before this happened?

See Q249321 for details and how to fix it.

I wasnt adding drives. The only thing that I did that was
out of the ordinary between the shutdown before it
happened and the shutdown when the error occured was use
Spybot to kill all of the spyware on my pc.

I tried this procedure, but was unable to complete it. the PC uses a USB
cable modem normally and won't boot long enough for me to setup a NIC. I too
didn't add any drives or change any partition setup so not sure what might
have caused the issue. if anyone has any other experience on fixing this,
please let us know

thanks much
