Instant log off!

I have scanned out a number of viruses from an XP installation.

Unfortunately I do not have a record of the viruses.

Now when I try to log on to windows - as soon as the desktop background
appears the system automatically logs me out (logging off, Saving settings
and returns to the fast user switching screen)!

I have also tried in safe mode with both users and admin account!

Any ideas before I wipe and re-install?

SFC /SCANNOW

and/or

Repair installation to replace corrupted files followed by re-installing SP2
and SP3.

Oops I forgot to mention that I had already run a system repair (from an XP
SP2 cd) which was unsuccessful.

Give Me

Do an in place upgrade, what has happened is the registration has expired. I
had to do this and the online registration did not work but via phone did.
