When I attempt to run the Automated System Recovery (ASR) wizard, I receive
the following error message:

The backup could not be completed due to an error.

To see detailed information, click Report.

When I click on the report button, I see this in the dialog box:

Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: File
Media name: "Backup.bkf created 7/14/2005 at 3:06 AM"

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:Catastrophic failure

Aborting Backup.

The operation did not successfully complete.

I've tried searching KB and other resource but cannot find anything on this
error. I also tried to test vrfydsk.exe at the command prompt. The message
I receive is :

Attempting to create shadow copy of
\\?\Volume{b898a964-fea1-11d5-8c1c-806d61726
96f}\.

Shadow copy creation failed on
\\?\Volume{b898a964-fea1-11d5-8c1c-806d6172696f}\
..
Unexpected error. (Error: 0xc0000005)

I apologize, I neglected to mention that I am running Windows XP Professional
and I've installed SP1. SP2 has some over zealous security features that I
found to be more of a help than a hinderance. In any case SP2 doesn't
resolve the problem I first noticed it in SP2. I wiped the drive and started
over with just SP1. The primary problem I seem to be encountering is that the
Shadow Volume Copy failes. I have tried running the ASR back up manually
using the snap:blush:ff switch for ntbackup, but this doesn't work, at least not
for backing up the System State.
The article that was posted appears to address general problems with the
backup utility. Mine is specific to volume shadow copy. I have found that I
can run the backup on other files. Just not System state because it tries to
do a volume shadow copy which basically tries grab the files even if they are
currently in use.

Caeanis,
I had the same problem. Make sure your "Volume Shadow Copy" service
is running.

Run "services.msc", and enable that service if it's disabled, and then
click "start".
