Automated System Recovery: Catastrophic failure

Several attempts at generating an Automated System Recovery set in XP pro
SP1, all had a "Catastrophic failure" message in the log file (I have
copied the first log file messages from the latest ASR attempt, below)
--------------------------------------------------------

Reverting to non-shadow copy backup mode.

In the Event Viewer, the following error was recorded 4 times during the
last ASR Set backup.

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error
RegOpenKeyExW(HKLM,SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Providers,0,KEY_ALL
_ACCESS,&ptr). hr = 0x80070002

My OS is XP pro SP1

The Volume Shadow Copy service is listed as Started and "Automatic" in the
services list

Does anyone here know what the reason for the ASR failures might be, and
what I
can do to fix it?
