automate new folder creation

The only way I can stay organized is to constantly file
incoming documents in folders. There is an XP option
to "show common tasks in folders", and one of the common
tasks is to "make a new [sub] folder". Rather than
continue to |right click|new|folder|, I'm searching for
an elegant way to create new folders right on the desktop
with a single click on an icon in the quick launch
toolbar. Ideally, this would create a new empty folder on
the desktop, ready to be named. Any ideas?

I've got an idea, but is there an environment variable that
holds the Desktop path? I'd need that first, but not sure
if it exists...
