AutoComplete is inconsistant

It appears my selection for AutoComplete may be corrupt.

In the AutoComplete Settings dialog I have ALL checkboxes checked.

Yet some sites do not work.

I can understand where a bank or a credit card site may disable
AutoComplete - at least for passwords. But my beef is more general.

I was helping a friend (who also has XP Home SP2 installed).

I was surprise (and perhaps disappointed) to learn her IE6 has AutoComplete
enabled fop the Google Advanced Groups Search web site which I use daily.

How convenient that (on her PC) I do not have to type
"microsoft.public.windowsxp.general" in the Newsgroups edit box repeatedly.

Any ideas?

Clear all boxes in the Auto Complete, then close IE, and reopen. Reselect
the boxes you want to use, and close IE, then reboot. See if that helps.

Your History folder may be corrupted:

You may have a damaged registry key.
Try this:
With no programs open,
Run REGEDIT and make your way to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft Internet Explorer
IntelliForms
SPW
Create a System Restore point or export that key (Registry> Export- just in
case you wish to undo the change) then delete it- just the SPW key.
Restart the computer.

After several hours I finally got AutoComplete-Forms to work with the Google
Advanced Groups Search web site.

Not sure what finally did it, but here are what I consider the most likely
TWO possibilities:

Start > Run
sfc /scannow (with my XP CD inserted)
click OK

OR

Anticipating a possible corrupted INDEX file in my Temporary Internet Files
folder I deleted the entire contents using Windows Explorer.

C:\Documents and Settings\<user account>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet

Unfortunately Jan, the fix didn't stick.

Just wanted to make sure any future readers of this thread are not mislead.

I tried a 'repair install' of Windows XP to no avail.

My suspicion is one of the many 3rd party programs I have installed is
blocking AutoComplete-forms for Google Advanced Search.

Oh well.

have installed? Maybe if we knew that you had it would make it easier to
determine where the problem might be.

Have you tried sfc from a DOS prompt?

also...try the following:

1. Right-click on the taskbar, choose properties, click the Start Menu
Programs tab and click the Clear button.
2. To clear forms and passwords information, go to Tools, Internet Options,
click the Content tab, click the AutoComplete button, and choose Clear Forms
and Clear Passwords. Uncheck all boxes.
3. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, click the Advanced
tab and uncheck "use inline auto complete for web addresses" and "use inline
auto complete in Windows Explorer"
4. Backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
Go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IntelliForms\SPW

and delete any encrypted entries that are listed in the right pane window,
leaving only the (Default) entry.

After restarting Windows, go back to the Auto complete section and enable
all boxes, the to the Advanced tab and enable "inline auto complete" for
both again.

In addition, see if the is anything here that might help:

After many hours of research Jan, I believe I finally discovered what is
causing AutoComplete-Forms to stop working for the Google Advanced Group
Search at:

This problem arises on my Windows XP Home Edition (SP2) after running the
new Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1.

STEPS

1) Download Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1 at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en

2) Launch the program and select the option to Run Quick Scan Now.

3) After the scan is complete you should see (or may see) the following
listed as detected spyware (under the column 'Threat Name')..
"Possible Browser Hijack (Browser Modifier)"

4) Leave the default drop-list selection on the far left as REMOVE.

5) Check the checkbox for "Create restore point"

6) Now click the Continue button.

There you have it. You will no longer be able to use AutoComplete & forms
with the aforementioned Google search page for searching newsgroups, etc.
