Thnx for the prompt reply Taylor, but....
I must have been unclear. my problem is more 'how do i get AutoChk.Exe to
run', than it is 'Chkdsk.exe or Autochk.exe starts when you try to shut down
or restart your computer'.
i did however METHOD 1 check that a scan is not on a schedule.
When i checked Method 2: Check the Session Manager registry entry, i found i
did not have a 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\BootExecute' folder..... it is missing.
METHOD 3 is scanning drives for the error

I will restate my problem.
I initiated an AutoCheck one day long ago. Upon reboot (required), an error
screen stated that AutoChk.Exe could not be found.
It gave it's path '~system32/' , and said that the AutoCheck would be skipped.
Windows loaded and all was ok. The error message has appeared every boot
since.

i believe the scan was initiated by diskkeeper (to do a system level
defrag). removing the task from diskkeeper did not resolve.
Diskkeeper has since been uninstalled.
i am running WinXP SP2
i have searched for autochk.exe and it is in the srstem32 folder, where the
error message claims it not to be.

It may be in the system32 folder, but the entry may not be referencing the
location correctly.
Try searching through your registry for values of system32\autochk.exe and
corrct them.

i think this must be the problem.
it is also where i get a bit dummer.
i searched registry for 'system32\autochk.exe' and found nothing.
this is not something sfc can correct?

No, SFC will only replace Missing ( <-- keyword ) system files
and can't do anything about typos in your startup entries.

Run msconfig.exe from the Run window and in it's window click the
Startup tab and review the entries for any that make the incorrect
reference.

This was a malicious program and was either disabled or removed by
either a user or antimalware program. Go to Start>Run> type 'msconfig'
and click ok. Go to the startup tab and unckeck the AutoChk.exe box.
AutoChk.exe is not a legitmate windows component.
