Auto PC shut down not happening in 2k

Recently did clean instal of win 2k pro on to a NEC Dimension PC.

Used to have Win 98 but could not stand it any longer.

Under win 98, when you shut down the PC, it would power off by itself.
Under win 2k it will not , and you get the message
"It is now safe to turn off your computer"

How to I get it to Auto Shut down again?

Check your BIOS manufacturer for an update flash.

The machine under Win 98 used to autoshutdown, but not win 2k, does that
still point to BIOS update?

I understand that and it might. I had a new machine I bought for a client and it had wake on modem disabled but it still woke on
modem ring. There was a BIOS flash available and I used it. Problem fixed. Obviously Windows is trying to use the APM and APM is
not responding. Maybe a fresh APM might do the trick.

OK, thanks, will give it a go in a few days, when time allows. It is an
annoyance more than a problem, so not on the critical to do list

Cheers

I thought I might have a trawl through theMS knowledge base, and found an
answer, implemented it, and it worked!!.. All within the space of about 5
minutes!!!!.

Searched for single search term APM, found article

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810903&Product=win2000

It was NT APM/legacy interface Node disabled, on this machine.

From previous experiences of using the KB, I thought I was in for a long
haul, but no. I have two other client machines with the same problem, but
think I will leave them for another day, it will probably be a different
solution, do not want to spoil a (so far) good day.

Cheers
