Auto Shut Down disabled -- how do I enable it?

My Windows XP Pro will not shut down my system, (although win 98, Win ME and
Win 2K will shut it down automatically after I select "Turn Off Computer" in
the start menu).

I have an HDD selector switch which enabels me to select a HDD to boot up
with and so I can start with either Windows XP Pro, Win 2K Pro, Win ME or Win
98.

All the OS work well, but Windows XP will not shut down the PC bu itself; it
will go through the normal shut-down routine but then display a message that
says "It is now safe to turn off your computer" and I have to manually shut
it down by pushing the power switch.

On all the other OSs, it will shut down all the way without having to turn
it off manually at the power switch.

This occurred after a re-install of Win XP Pro. A long time back I stumbled
upon a way to enable the auto shut off, but I have been unable to find it
again (and searching "Help" or the Knowledge Base has been fruitless. Can
anyone tell me how to enable this auto shut down?

Double-click the Power Options icon in Control Panel, select the APM tab, and
turn on the Enable Advanced Power Management support option.

A probable cause is that your installation found the BIOS does not
adequately support the 'Advanced Configuration & Power Interface'
(ACPI). It then installs the older APM, but leaves it disabled. Go to
Control Panel - Power Options, and if there is an APM page, check
'Enable APM' on it.
