Audio Recording Problem.

When I plug in my headset and try to record something with the Window
XP voice recorder program, my computer freezes. I was trying earlie
(with numerous programs) to try video conferencing with a friend an
each time we tried it, my computer froze up. I can listen to music fin
and if I'm not recording and I speak into the mic, it comes through th
speakers just fine. But once I hit record or try to do any sort o
video conferencing the computer freezes up. Even if there is no mi
plugged in, if I hit record on the sound recorder in Windows my syste
freezes up. Can anyone help me out and let me know what if anythin
can be done? I have a P4 3.2 with one gig of RAM, a decent sound car
(not an onboard one) plenty of hard drive space and a decent vide
card. I'd like to do video conferencing with a friend but we can'
because of this audio problem and each time we try to, my syste
freezes up. I've tried seemingly everything and I can't figure it out
Thanks very much

Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio>Audio tab
Check under Recording - default device is properly designated.
Also check the Voice tab that they are not set to Modem Line Record
