audio insertion problem

I went a long time inserting audio with no problems. Now ppt tells me it
can't insert audio file. This includes all my audio files. (.wma) Recently
installed NeroExpess for slideshows and Nero Media Player was installed. (for
whatever that is worth) windows xp/ppt 2002

This sounds like things have been hijacked by nero.
Try a "system restore" roll-back to an earlier time, if you are using
windows xp

Or, try installing windows media player version 10 to set everything back.

Downloaded windows media player 10. Everything seemed to be ok but lost
media player icon from desktop. when I try to open from start menu it tells
me there " is an internal application error." Now i don't have media player,
but am able to insert audio into ppt. ??????

The icon is probably pointing to your old media player.
If you right click your "start" menu on windows, and choose "open", you can
then browse to find the current media player icon.... when you find it,
right click it and choose "copy", then find a bit of space on your desktop,
right click and choose "copy shortcut". This will get you a media player
icon back

I'd re-install the media player again. It sounds like something is not right
or conflicting

Or maybe do a Detect and Repair for Windows? Since media player is installed
with Windows, that might detect any problems with files, etc. and fix them.

Having problem locating "Detect and Repair." ?? And for info. when I go to
setup wm.exe in program files it tells me that I am running the most recent
version of media player 10 and all its components.

check and repair any damaged protected system files. Go to Start > Run and type
"sfc /scannow" (without the quotes) and click OK.

Have your Win XP CD handy because you'll probably be asked for it. This has
solved some very mysterious problems for me and for my customers, so maybe
you'll be lucky too. It searches all of the critical Windows files and checks
them and fixes any that have been tampered with. Let us know if it makes a
difference.

In the 2000 version, it insists on reading files from the Win CD

Doesn't give you a browse button to use in case you've dropped the CD contents
onto the HDD. Darn.

But if you have the CD, it works in Win 2000. I guess when Win 2000 was
released, disk space wasn't as cheap as it is today and it was assumed that no
one would dump the CD contents to hard disk. Heck, at today's price of about
$1.05/GB for external hard disk space, CD's are expensive.

The last two posts thre me off. I have reached the point where it asks me to
insert the xp installation cd, but now I don't know which option to choose.

When you are asked to insert the Windows XP CD, chances are that the CD's start
up menu will show up. Just click "Exit" on the menu. That window will close
and underneath you'll see there is still a System File Checker window with a
progress bar. Allow it to continue running. It may run for 30 minutes,
depending on your processor's speed and other resources. When it completes the
window will disappear. It isn't too fancy, so if errors are found it just fixes
them and doesn't tell you what it found or what it fixed.

So, once it finishes, return to PowerPoint and see whether you can now insert
your audio file(s).

I'd assume so. I was just grumping that it makes you use the physical CD when it
the contents are right there in front 'o Baud 'n everybody.

I guess this'd put the kibosh on network installs and probably get in the way of
installs from a CD other than the first one on the system too.

That'll teach me not to let Bill do it HIS way. ;-)

Your best bet would be to ask for help in the WMP newsgroup at

None that I know of offhand, but I don't use MP much.

If it were mine, I'd try uninstalling and then reinstalling it after shutting the
computer down and restarting it (and maybe eliminating as much stuff running in the
background as possible, including antivirus apps)
