When I was trying to find more about ERUNDT which I understand it is
essentially a registry backup I also found this: NTREGOPT. I assume to
run ERUNDT I need to download it from the offical site and creates a
registry back up? However, according to this

information I should disable XP's System Restore as it's a resource
hog, yet without it I would have been in serious trouble on more than
one occasion.

It seems rather involved and kind of scary. I was under the impression
that if I had an external hardrive I could back up my entire operating
system? Am I not understanding something? It seems just when I think
I'm nearly finished with this another thing keeps popping up that
needs to be done.

Another small problem has come up. You know how when you move your
mouse pointer over the time it pops up to display the date? Well until
tonight mine did so but for some reason now all I see is the barely

ERUNT only backs up the registry,
Take a complete registry backup using ERUNT:

System Restore backs up the Registry and additional files (but not all).

What you need for a good recovery method is an Image Backup tool such as
Ghost or True Image, where the image file is stored to the external drive.

The 'Issues' feature is a "Blue Cube" located in the upper left corner.
Unless you known in great detail how to analyze the list generated when you
click the 'Scan for Issues' button, I would not run this feature in
CCleaner.

From another post, I noticed some questions about ERUNT. Don't
disable System Restore. I was suprised to read that.

What ERUNT does is backup your registry and makes a folder
C:\Windows\Erunt. Read the restore part of this page -

ERUNT is handy if your registry is hosed somehow and you want to
restore it. I use it to make a copy of the registry when I install a
program and if I have trouble, or don't like the program, I restore the
registry with ERUNT.

If you're not comfortable with ERUNT, just don't use it. Sometime down
the road, you can revisit it.

Just ignore the NTREGOPT part. You don't need that, particularly if
you're uncomfortable with it.

You just have to do some research. Again, if you're not comfortable
using a program, don't use it.

BTW, have you tried to burn any cd's or dvd's ?

Hmm, I didn't either. With CCleaner, look at the Cleaner - Windows and
Applications checkboxes. You can figure out what you want cleaned and
just check the checkboxes.

Although there is a good chance that using the registry cleaner option
won't cause a problem, there is a chance it could.
DON'T use the registry cleaner part of CCleaner unless you are 100% sure
of what you're doing.
If you do decide to try the registry part, make sure to backup the
changes. - The program will ask you if you want to.

ERUNDT backs up the registry which resides on your C drive and ERUNDT
backs it up to your C drive. ERUNDT is just a registry backup tool and
only deals with the registry.
If you backup your drive to an external drive with Acronis, etc, the
registry and everything else will be backed up.

Again, just skip ERUNT, you can live without it.

original problems I was having. Those have been resolved, however
things became so convoluted that I decided to start a new thread to

Here's my reply to your question about the Device Manager.

The Device Manager shows it as DVD/CD-ROM and when I click on the +
sign it shows the drive and when I click on properites it shows:

Device Type: DVD/CD-ROM drives
Manufactuer: (Standard CD -ROM drives)
Location: Location 0(0)


Says that the device is working properly.


I clicked the Properties tab and all it shows is the volume and that
the CD audio is enabled.


I clicked the DVD Region and it shows that the region hasn't been
selected and that I can do this so many times until it reaches zero
then it I can't change even if i reinstall Windows. I was going to
change it to the United States but thought I better ask about this
before doing so or should I just leave it alone?


I clicked Volumes and apparently its for use when theres a CD or DVD
in use as its fields are blank.


I clicked Driver and it says that it isn't digitially signed (I found
earlier, that this is why Microsoft doesn't reconize this drive as a
DVD/RW drive and said that when the next service pak comes out it
will
rectify this). It also has information on Driver Provider, Driver
Date, Driver Version 5.1.2535.0, Driver Details, Update Driver, Roll
Back Driver, Uninstall.


I clicked Detail and it has the following:

and below that a box with Device Instance ID highlighted with a down

My driver is the same date and version as reported by Wally and is Digitally
Signed also.
However if you look at the Driver Details option, my Roxio drivers (I use
Roxio Easy Creator) are not Digitally Signed.

I think from what I've read so far I will go ahead with external hard
drive and either get True Image or CasperXP(which I remember Anna
mentioning) and do a complete image backup and disreagrd ERUNDT which
is a little 'iffy' to me, especially when I see contradictions when I

I looked at CCleaner and again it's difficult for me to know exactly
which to select e.g. Cookies, Recently Typed URL's, Delete Index.dat,
Run(in start menu), Search Autocomplete, Other Explorer MRU's, Memory
Dumps, Chkdsk File Fragments, Windows Log Files, how is one to know?

Should I leave all Applications clicked? Well, since I don't have
Firefox/Mozilla I can un-check all those underneath it. Correct? I
also see Ewido there and I also saw it in my Add/Remove programs and
was wondering if its a part of another program or is it an application
by itself? The reason I ask is since I already have Spybot and A-
squared for malware removal then why do I need Ewido? If I don't need
it I can delete it.

Should I analyze my computer before hand?

I clicked on Tools to see what it was and seems like CCleaners own
Add/Remove program and gives you extra like renaming and
uninstalling.

I clicked on Options and says I can download the latest version here
but am somewhat leary of the buttons to the left; Include, Exclude,
Advanced. I clciked on Setting and Cookies and are somewhat self
explanatory.

I went back into Device Manager and chaged the Region to Region 1
(USA) but it still shows that its digitally unsigned. It is rather odd
that we have the same drivers but your shows a DVD-RAM and mine shows
DVD-CD-ROM. Yes, I loaded everything that was on the CD;
Cyberlink(Powere DVD, Power Producer), Nero 7 Essentials, Secure Disck
Viewer, and the Internal Manual.

No I haven't made any CD's/DVD's. I want to get everything resolved
before moving to the next step.
