Disk Cleanup

Have WinXP, Home Ed, SP2 and IE6. Going to install SP3 disk, then IE7. I do
a Disk Cleanup in Safe Mode, but every time I do I still get "Content lE5"
screen with 8 folders and one file folder shown when I "View Files" which
appears that they are really never cleaned up/deleted. The amount varies from
time-to-time. Shouldn't these files be deleted before I install SP3 and IE7?
They just always are there every time I do Disk Cleanup.

Also checked disk space for SP3 installation which shows free space 66.89 GB
and SP requires about 1,765 MB free space. How does this equate?

Thanks for your help.

Ehlo Gramma,
First and foremost, "Content IE5" is a default folder - it's been in XP for
ages, as far as I remember, you shouldn't be worried about this.

The files you're talking about are Temporary Internet Files and they can
be either cleaned by going to Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete...
or downloading software such as CCleaner that will do the job for you.

1,765MB is basically 1.8GB. Thus, you have plenty of space.

No, don''t delet them, because they will be recreated again on next boot!
Do you check all check boxes when you run the cleaning wizard?

CCleaner v2.20.920 - Slim

66.89 GB is enough for SP3 and you are ready to install it on this machine.

Make sure the machine clean from malware and viruses by runing a thorough
and regualr scan with an up2date security software.

Not necessarily; That folder only contains "temporary files" and they
may for some reason still be in use. Files that are "in use" cannot and
will not be deleted by XP. That's why they vary from time to time;
different files are in use at different times.
There are ways, such as working in Safe Mode and making cleanup the
very first thing you do, but it should not be necessary. They should
not mess up the SP3 install or cause any problems. In my opinon, go
ahead and do the install of SP3 and don't worry about this one. It
sounds like you are using the instructions for installing SP3 and all
should be fine.
Also checked disk space for SP3 installation which shows free space
66.89 GB and SP requires about 1,765 MB free space. How does this

These are fine. GB stands for billions of bytes. G = Giga and B =
Bytes.
So you have about 67 billion Bytes of room per your statement.

M = Mega = Million. B = Bytes again. So you have 1,765 million bytes
SP3 wants to use. Converting that to GB, it is 1.765 GB (1,000 time
1,765 = 1.765)..
Therefore, you NEED 1.765 GB of space, and you have 67 GB of space
free. Your'e all set; That's plenty of room!

HTH & happy computing,

Twayne`
