Recently I was unable to open attachments at all, after uninstalling IE8 I
can now open PPS files but when I try to open a PDF attachment it opens up
Microsoft Office Picture Manager. The only way I can view the attachment is
to save it to another folder and then open it with Adobe 9.1.
Can anyone help me with this problem
Thanks

Reset the file association..

"Start" - "Default Programs" - "Associate a file type with a program"
highlight .pdf
click on "Change program"
select Adobe Reader/Acrobat/etc.

-or-
right-click on a .pdf file, select "Open with"
and go find the Adobe .exe

In addition to Gary's advice to uninstall IE8:
The problems can be reduced to JPG and TXT files (all other files types
opening fine) with a workaround:
Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties.
In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered value to
%UserProfile%.
Click OK.
Restart Windows Mail and try opening attachments.

Rainald, I have dropped the advice to use the shortcut modification.
I think most users would be unhappy to have JPG attachments fail.

Dear Gary,
I haven't been here for a while due to a holiday of more than two weeks
(it was really great!) ;-)

I noticed that meanwhile you dropped the recommendation for the
workaround.

I'm not sure.
We just get very little feedback.

Many of those replying say that the workaround works just fine.
Others seem to have problems in finding the right place of the shortcut
(link):
The standard shortcut in top of "Start" is not editable.

But all in all I am under the impression that the workaround indeed is
of help.

I for one prefer to keep with IE8 and use the workaround for the TXT and
JPG attachments. I just don't want to loose IE8's features and it's not
too difficult to work with TXT and JPG attachments with saving and then
opening.
So I will continue pointing to the workaround.

P.S. I really can not understand why there still is no fix for the
meanwhile obvious problem nor even an explanation from MS.
Unbelievable ...
P.P.S. I also noticed that PA Bear does not want to give up his really
wild AV theories :-( :-(
Really strange to see how stubborn he behaves ...

How long would you expect Microsoft to take until fixing the problem with
IE8?

That's a big unknown.
They may never fix it since Windows Mail has been deprecated in favor of
Windows Live Mail.
