Could not Open Attachments in Windows Mail emails

S

I was unable to open any of the attachments that were in my emails that
previously I had been able to open. I did some reading here and found many
references to incompatability with Norton and the need to change my security
settings in Win Mail. almost by accident I came across a person who was not
happy with IE8 and happened to mention that among other problems his Win Mail
quit working properly after he upgraded to IE8. I uninstalled IE8 which
reverted back to IE7 and now my Win Mail works correctly and all of my
attachments can be opened.

If you'll read all the posts about attachments problems over the past month
or so, you'll see IE8 mentioned often.

And what did you try to resolve the behavior, other than uninstalling IE7?

I have uninstalled IE8 only to find that vista mail still maintains the IE
8 format and will not allow the opening of attachments that are .doc and pdf
..

I have used Open Office 3.0 (free download) to open the.doc. file from
email It has to be set in the associations section of default programs
Other than re installing from the recovery disks we are stuck with this
dilemma as Microsoft doesn't seem to be interested in cleaning up their mess

I hope i am not violating any rules by posting a link.

No, this is fully OK!
Only *attachments* (images etc.) are a NoNo in the newsgroups.
This was used
on a client of mine that cannot handle switching back and forth
between software. He installed IE8 and then the trouble began. I put
on Office 2007 Enterprise and kept Windows mail because of his
inability to change (can't wait for the calls about Word 2007!) This
little tool fixed it right away. It did what it said.

Yes, this registry hack cure the problem with DOC-attachments in case
there is a problem with the file-type associations.

The problem discussed in this thread (and most of all the others dealing
with attachments) was something totally different, however:
There was a problem with all kinds of attachments and especially JPG and
TXT files which affected many system (though not the majority) after
installing IE8.

Thanks God (or better: some developers at MS) this has been fixed
meanwhile. The latest patch for IE (Cumulative Security Update for
Internet Explorer 8 in Windows Vista (KB972260) - 7/28/2009)[1] gas
brought remedy. With this update the problem which has kept us busy for
many moons is a thing of the past. Hallelujah!
