I just had DSL via ATT installed today (required a technician visit to create
a specific line to our home), and we were able to get internet service
working, and after the tech left, I was able to get the email working via
Windows Mail (Vista environment) with ATT as the service provider. NOW,
almost four hours later, the email account will not recognize my user name or
password and I cannot send or receive emails. I get the error messages that
are common (SSL type). Is this enough information for you to go on?

What email provider are you trying to use? If it's ATT, see here:

Right-click on the error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.

Which antivirus are you running?

An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Emailing: joel and deb 004, joel and
deb 002, joel and deb 003', Account: 'joelhutcheson', Server:
'mail.bellsouth.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '421 Cannot connect to
SMTP server 207.115.11.17 (207.115.11.17:25), connect error 10060', Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC67

AVAST anti-virus

I just did a tracert on 207.115.11.17 and it went to a pacbell.net site
before
it reached mail.bellsouth.net. That could cause problems for you since
outgoing mail connections to port 25 are often blocked if they cross over
from
one internet provider's equipment to another's.

See if this offers you any option to use a port other than port 25:

http://helpme.att.net/article.php?item=10918

Just trying all the ports is a very slow way to find out. There are about
65,000
ports available and it's unlikely that any server is set to accept outgoing
mail
on more than a few of them.

Also, did you use the standard install for avast!? If so, you can make it
more
compatible with Windows Mail by uninstalling it, then doing a custom install
where you tell it to leave out the part that scans email.

By any chance were you using a laptop away from home when you
got that error message?

On the ATT website after logging in with username and domain, it said: This
web page is not available

Sorry, there is no web page matching your request. You may have typed the
address incorrectly, or this page no longer exists.

I will try re-installing avast, but I'm pretty sure that is not affecting
the email because I disabled it.

And the entity providing the Internet connection through that wireless
connection is BellSouth? That type of error often indicates a cross
connection from one provider to another.

Hi, there, well, since I upgraded to DSL Broadband, now my Windows Mail
program won't work. If I set it only detect using broadband, I get error
815. If I leave it as LAN, is comes up failed.

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'att.net E-Mail', Server:
'postoffice.worldnet.att.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Now, I have tried changing the pop3 and smpt to the supposedly new versions,
as you have listed in that http on ATT website. But it too, does the same
for me, and
again if you click to dial up default, it comes up with three pop up
windows. 1st, is the connect window, the 2nd opening up wan on port ppppoe,
and then 3rd error 815, stating server name is incorrect, and notify or call
your isp for the correct server name.

So, all these new programs, keep enhancing things, but also create hassles
for computer users. So, the topic and problem continues. I have searched
for answers here, and on ATT.

And it still works with dial up.

AT&T has at least three major subdivisions: former SBC, former Bellsouth,
and AT&T Worldnet. Those divisions use different email settings, so you
have to be careful as to which AT&T help page you follow. To find out which
subdivision you are in, what is the part of your email address after the
@ symbol? If you are in the former Bellsouth territory, do you have their
FastAccess DSL?

Where exactly are you going to set "only detect using broadband"?

Incidentally, your DSL may not be optimally configured, since for
maximum efficiency the PPPoE function should not be done on the computer
but on the DSL modem or router. This may be part of your connection issue.
With PPPoE performed on the modem or router, the PC uses the "LAN" for
connectivity.

I have both worldnet.att.net, and att.net as my email addresses after the
prompt. I was a worldnet user, and they dropped the worldnet, it appears, but
in my Windows Mail, it does look up or transfer email on dial up, but not on
broadband as I said. I tried changing the pop 3 and the smtp, to the
pop.att.yahoo.net, etc, but that didn't allow it to work either. So, I have
read and searched your answers, and the questions others have posed, and
their resolutions. But, I haven't figured out the magic combination. So,
getting back to both worldnet.att.net and att.net, dial up will work, but not

You didn't address the second part of my previous reply.
Even if you have the correct mail servers, your connection type
may be screwed up because of an improper implementation of
PPPoE DSL.

After the @ symbol, it is att.net. Now, when I did upgrade, I had to create
a new email address, however, I still want to use my original
worldnet.att.net email address for it also allows you to have homepages. Oh,
I also tried adding my new email address in the Windows mail, and it too
would come up failed. Also, I believe it would pop up a user name and
password screen, so that is even another aspect, that confuses the heck out
of me. And since, att.net has allowed it's original worldnet email accounts
also to be seen as att.net email, there is two accounts listed in my windows
mail, and they again will only work with dial up. Not broadband. So, I
think I understand some of the possible changes occurring, where ATT says you
may have to change the pop3 to pop.att.yahoo.net, and the smpt to
smpt.att.yahoo.net, but I tried changing this, and to the new port numbers,
and no it still didn't work. I guess a call will need to be made.

Yes, it sounds like you will need to call customer service for help.
I have a feeling, though, that even with the correct server names and
port numbers you will continue to have a problem due to the way
your PPPoE DSL has been set up.
