ATT/SBC Global no longer works???

I have been using Windows Mail with my ATT/SBC Global account for well over a
year. All of sudden, I get this message when I try to send/receive (and ATT
cannot help me):

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Server:
'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error
Number: 0x80004005

Anyone else experience this and find a solution? Thank you!!

Unknown errors in Windows Mail are often due to interference from an
antivirus program. What if any antivirus programs do you have?

I use McAfee Antivirus Program. Could this be the problem (and why all of a
sudden the problems)? Thank you!!

Most versions of the McAfee antivirus program tend to cause problems in
Windows Mail, but it often takes months for these problems to show up.
Just disabling the antivirus program seldom helps; you have to uninstall it
instead to see much improvement. You often then have to run this cleanup
program to take care of what the uninstall left behind:

<http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee&type=TS&ia=1>

You may even have to remove your email account under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

If this cures your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus program
that doesn't cause such problems. Most versions of the Norton antivirus
program and a recent version of the Trend antivirus program are bad choices;
they cause problems in Windows Mail too. I recommend either avast! or
AVG, either one with a custom install that tells it to leave out the part
that
scans email.

WOW - I didn't realize anti-virus could be such problems. I have used AVAST
in the past (before Vista and Windows Mail) and liked it. But, should I
really disable the email scan? Isn't that the main way viruses get to me -
through emails? Thank you for all your help!!!!

If you want to see Symantec (Norton), the originator of email scanning,
admit that it isn't necessary, look here:

<http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...88256c7500723cf0?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam>

Email scanning lets you find the virus a little faster, at the cost of
causing
problems in some email programs, especially Windows Mail. However,
a virus that doesn't escape from the email won't cause you any problems,
and if it does escape, it will be detected then.

I received the exact same message and I have an sbcglobal.net account. I
spent five hours with tech support from on-line chat to live tier 2 phone
converstation and of course a trip to India and then back to USA where the
tech simply googled the error message and told me it was a MS Mail problem.
FIVE hours! I can send but not receive mail. I sent a test message and did
see on my att.my.yahoo account but when I tried to get it with (VISTA 64)
MAIL, I get the ...40005 error message.

I had this exact same problem myself earlier this week.
Apparently AT&T/Yahoo did something that corrupted mail on the
web server, because there have been quite a few people reporting
this problem.

Go to http://mail.yahoo.com and log in with your AT&T credentials.
Then clean out all the folders in your webmail. If you want to save
any messages, create a new folder and move those messages to the
new folder. Empty the thrash also. Close webmail, then try Windows
Mail again.

This exact same thing happened to me today. I googled the error message and
read one suggestion that worked perfect. I just deleted all messages in the
deleted folder and junk e-mail files. The author said default folders get
corrupted after a period of time so I assume you may sometimes also need to
delete messages in the other default folders. In any case, just clearing out
the two folders mentioned above and it works fine. Go figure.....
