ATI 9100IGP - Any information sources?

Anyone know where to read up on this new chipset? Or where to find
new/updated files.
I just put together a new PC with an Asus P4R800-VM (P4 2.8GHz 800FSB) (2Gb
PC2700 DDR - Dual Channel mode with 2 pairs of SpecTek on each channel)

PC is a blazer. But has some "quirks".

Device manager detects 3 monitors (1) Default (2) Plug & Play (3) 19Inch
Proview {which is my ONLY monitor. Have deleted the other 2, and even
disabled, they wont go away. May be a chipset glitch due to the 3 monitor
support. I updated to Catalyst 4.2's, same thing.

And the biggest, is the single DVD +/- RW drive I use (NEC1300a) , reads,
writes, but wont PLAY a DVD movie. I can boot to it, load WinXP. Use Nero to
read/write. But if I try to play a DVD movie with PowerDVD, or even with
Windows media player 9 , it gives an error, and wont play. I tried different
UDMA100 cables (they all work), tried same drive in another PC, it fully
worksand plays movies. And, I see NOWHERE where ATI has any Busmaster IDE
drivers like Intel or VIA has. The only drivers ATI has on their website are
GART, and SMbus. Same with Asus. XP says it has UDMA Mode 2 enabled on that
drive.

I even tried several Asus BIOS' - same thing.
The DVD+/-RW is master on the second channel - jumper set.

My NEC1300A works just fine with DVDs.
I use PowerDVD XP ( version 4 ). You are using a XP-compatible
version of PowerDVD, I presume ?

( paragraph below moved for clarity )

Since the video on this board is integrated, surely the Motherboard
manual steps through the driver installation with screens and/or
text to show what you should see as the driver is installed and
checked-out ?

Of course.
And, I see NOWHERE where ATI has any Busmaster IDE
drivers like Intel or VIA has.

Any motherboard drivers required should be on the CD rom supplied with

the MB. If none, then the board requires none. Again, please refer to
your motherboard manual.
The only drivers ATI has on their website are
GART, and SMbus. Same with Asus. XP says it has UDMA Mode 2 enabled on that
drive.

That is perfectly correct. You have no IDE interface problems with the
drive.

I even tried several Asus BIOS' - same thing.

Panic sign --- never update a BIOS unless the BIOS
release notes indicate that it directly addresses a problem
you are having.

Did you meticulously follow the Software installation sequence
given in the MB manual, using the software supplied on the CD
together with Win XP ? Once the system is working, you can try
upgrading (one at a time !!) to the latest drivers, using System
Restore as a recovery mechanism. If you did not meticulously
follow the sequence, why not try a re-format and clean-install
from scratch again, following the MB manual to the letter
( if not in Taiwanese.... )..

Yes, I use the same PowerDVD 4.0 XP that works with Windows XP Pro, and
works with *THIS* drive on other motherboards.

manual steps through the driver installation with screens and/or
text to show what you should see as the driver is installed and

The manual driver installation is an ATI "All in One". Loads video driver,
SMBus, ATI GART driver. No more, no less. And after loading this Asus CD, I
now have 3 different monitors listed in Device Manager (where I only have my
Single monitor connected to the PC)

That is perfectly correct. You have no IDE interface problems with the

None, other then that DVD movies will hang under Media Player, and PowerDVD
4.0.

Panic? Please...
Each new BIOS mentions "Update VGA BootROM " (trying to iron out the video
bug)

There isnt anything else to "follow". Loaded XP Pro SP1 on a re-formatted WD
hard drive (NTFS) booting straight from the DVD-RW {no multiple monitors at
this point}. Load Asus CD Rom "All in One" driver. {now have "Default" -
"Plug & Play" - and my Proview monitor listed in Device Manager}. Also,
though I can boot to the CD to load WinXP , it will not play a movie from
it. [Drive removed, placed in another PC, reads/writes/plays movies]

I have, the drive is fine. And tonight by total accident, I found out the
drive on this new PC will play non-region coded movies. I put one in, and it
came right up (same PowerDVD load). Took it out, placed a regular movie in,
and no go. The drive is set to region code 1 (US), and should start right
up, but it doesnt. (yes the movie disks are region coded 1)

I HAVE NO CLUE .

This new motherboard has some strange quirks

A) Detects phantom monitors ,
B) Dislikes DeCSS DVD movies

I found out what it was.

The freaking ASPI layer. I always use NERO (which loads its oen ASPI driver,
and lets other programs use it also). I unchecked NeroCheck to load at
start-up , thinking it was a registration leftover. NeroCheck must be the
loaded telling XP to use their ASPI driver.

Ahhhhh...such is life (dealing with computers)
