I just finished building an athlon pc and it won't start. The
motherboard light is green but when i press the power on button -
nothing!

Can anyone suggest somewhere i could have gone wrong - or is it likely
to be a faulty motherboard -

any help much appreciated

Check under the board to make sure nothing metal, such as the risers (the
things that hold the mobo to the case), is touching the back of the board
except for the ones you are using.

You may wish to remove the Mobo from the case, place it on the plastic foam
rubber that came in the box and try to start it with just CPU, Cooler/fan,
Memory and Graphic Card attached.

Does the fan spin for a fraction of a second.

Is the fan on the CPU connected to the correct header on the Mobo. Many
mobo's need to detect the fan or they turn off immediately.

Ensure the CMOS jumper is in the correct position, many come in the wrong
position by default.

Place headphones in the audio connector and see if you can hear any beeps.

Remove everything except the CPU and see what happens. Then add memory and
try and then graphics card and try, then floppy etc.

What Mobo is it ?
What CPU is it ?

Check all the case to mobo connectors. Reverse power connector. Happens to
everyone ;-)

Check to see if you put the case connectors for the power switch in the
right place on the MB. I have done this a few times.

Yep. I have been building systems for years and yesterday I got stuck on a
new board that wouldn't boot. Turned out I had plugged the power switch
lead into the power LED header. (me a dumbarse) Took me 10 mins to figure
that one out! Aside from that check the FSB jumper is set correctly and
then back to basics.
