ASSUMPTIONS REGARDING YOUR POST

1.. Because you have posted here it is assumed that you are using Windows XP. What version?

2.. If you do not state otherwise it is assumed that you are using a standard ATA hard drive. Why? Because it is the most common drive available today.

3.. It is assumed that the hard drive is physically connected to the primary IDE controller "on your motherboard" in a single or master configuration. Why? Because it is the most common configuration.

4.. It is assumed that the operating system is installed in a primary partition. It is further assumed that this partition is designated as drive C: Why? Because it is the most common configuration.

5.. It is assumed that you are using at least 256 meg of RAM for your system. If you are using less - please state so.

6.. It is assumed that you have not altered your default pagefile size. If you have - please state so.

7.. It is assumed that your computer was operating normally prior to the problem you are experiencing at the moment. If not - please give specifics!

8.. It is assumed that a friend with computer experience DID NOT try to fix your computer before you came here for assistance. If one did, it is further assumed that you will enlighten us to the fact, along with what he did and the results of his attempts.

9.. It is assumed that you have not deleted, or tried to delete, any Windows XP system components and that if you have you will alert us to the fact.

10.. It is assumed that you are running a fully patched operating system. This includes SP2 and subsequent updates. If you are NOT, please state as such.

11.. It is assumed that you are running a competent and up to date version of a quality antivirus product. Which one? If not, please let us know that also.

12.. It is assumed that you are connected to the internet from behind a firewall, either the one that is supplied by SP2 or a third party application. Please state what you use. If you don't use a firewall let us know.

13.. It is assumed that all default Window services are running. If you turned any off, let us know. Try to list those that you have disabled.

14.. It is assumed that you will tell us how you connect to the internet if you are having a connection problem.

15.. If you are having a problem with a 3rd party application (or hardware), it is assumed that you have exhausted the manufacturers resources before you post here for help - with something that has nothing to do with Windows XP.

16.. It is assumed that you have scanned your system for unwanted pests, more commonly known as spyware, trojans, worms, virus's, dialers etc. If you have not, it is assumed that you will state that fact.

17.. It is assumed that you have at least tried to use available help and resources to get some information about your question. These include the extensive help section included with Windows XP as well as on-line resources such as a Google search!

18.. If you are having problems with a computer purchased from a major manufacturer, it is assumed that you have tried to find an answer to your problem from the manufacturer's web site before you post your question here. Why? We will likely send you there for the resolution to your problem anyway!

19.. It is assumed that you will post all relevant information concerning your problem, along with a clearly worded description of your problem. Why? So we don't have to go back and forth with you for three useless cycles to obtain the information necessary to make a diagnosis.

20.. It is assumed that you will type your question in a user friendly format. It is further assumed that you DO know that this is NOT a teen chat room and that not everyone knows what your abbreviations stand for.

ASSUMPTIONS REGARDING YOUR POST
Nice idea but too long. Am betting very few people, especially those
posting from CDO interface, will read all of it. :^/

On the other hand, if even a few read it and as a result post more details
about their situation, it will have been worth the effort it took to put
this together and post it. Thanks, Richard.

ASSUMPTIONS REGARDING YOUR POST

Don't post in html. It upsets many of the natives! ;-)
1.. Because you have posted here it is assumed that you are using
Windows XP. What version? .

Does Devils Own count as its own version?
2.. If you do not state otherwise it is assumed that you are using
a standard ATA hard drive. Why? Because it is the most common drive
available today.

It might be the most widely used, but SATA drives are gaining. The only
reason ATA drives are more commonly available is an attempt to dump the
inventory on them.
3.. It is assumed that the hard drive is physically connected to
the primary IDE controller "on your motherboard" in a single or
master configuration. Why? Because it is the most common
configuration.

LOL! But I got 4 drives on a PCI RAID card, can't you assume that.
Don't you love me anymore Crusty?
4.. It is assumed that the operating system is installed in a
primary partition. It is further assumed that this partition is
designated as drive C: Why? Because it is the most common
configuration.

Ok, that a good assumption, at least for on of the OS partitions I have!

5.. It is assumed that you are using at least 256 meg of RAM for
your system. If you are using less - please state so.

Not that is plain ridiculous! I never assume that one.

6.. It is assumed that you have not altered your default pagefile
size. If you have - please state so.

But I saw some where on the internet I can turn off the page file if I
have more than a Gig of RAM!
7.. It is assumed that your computer was operating normally prior
to the problem you are experiencing at the moment. If not - please
give specifics!

Big Bad assumption! Most of these schmucks have OEM machines from Dell,
HP, Sony, Gateway . . . . and most of them never worked right from the
get go!

8.. It is assumed that a friend with computer experience DID NOT
try to fix your computer before you came here for assistance. If one
did, it is further assumed that you will enlighten us to the fact,
along with what he did and the results of his attempts.

Naw, I assume that the OP did try to fix it themselves and screwed it up
even more!
9.. It is assumed that you have not deleted, or tried to delete,
any Windows XP system components and that if you have you will alert
us to the fact.

Like they would know that?! Get real!
10.. It is assumed that you are running a fully patched operating
system. This includes SP2 and subsequent updates. If you are NOT,
please state as such.

What?! You take an awful lot for granted!
11.. It is assumed that you are running a competent and up to date
version of a quality antivirus product. Which one? If not, please let
us know that also.

If they are having problems, it will be assumed that they are using
Norton AV!

12.. It is assumed that you are connected to the internet from
behind a firewall, either the one that is supplied by SP2 or a third
party application. Please state what you use. If you don't use a
firewall let us know.

Isn't that what's between the engine of my car and my feet?

13.. It is assumed that all default Window services are running. If
you turned any off, let us know. Try to list those that you have
disabled.

And not turned off by viruses and spyware?
14.. It is assumed that you will tell us how you connect to the
internet if you are having a connection problem.

What, I'm not connected. Are you sure?!

15.. If you are having a problem with a 3rd party application (or
hardware), it is assumed that you have exhausted the manufacturers
resources before you post here for help - with something that has
nothing to do with Windows XP.

LOL! But there goes half of Carey's replies telling them to go
elsewhere! How is going keep his MVP status, if he doesn't have those
replies that even he would have difficulty screwing up?!
16.. It is assumed that you have scanned your system for unwanted
pests, more commonly known as spyware, trojans, worms, virus's,
dialers etc. If you have not, it is assumed that you will state that
fact.

Is it assumed that they clean up any infestation, or just run the scans?
17.. It is assumed that you have at least tried to use available
help and resources to get some information about your question. These
include the extensive help section included with Windows XP as well
as on-line resources such as a Google search!

Yeah! XP gen is too crowded with people that have little problems
easily solved by doing a Google search. And we really need more time to
fight out the EULA war, than answer a bunch of easy questions!
18.. If you are having problems with a computer purchased from a
major manufacturer, it is assumed that you have tried to find an
answer to your problem from the manufacturer's web site before you
post your question here. Why? We will likely send you there for the
resolution to your problem anyway!

Call India! Do OEMs really save money sending all calls halfway around
the world?
19.. It is assumed that you will post all relevant information
concerning your problem, along with a clearly worded description of
your problem. Why? So we don't have to go back and forth with you for
three useless cycles to obtain the information necessary to make a
diagnosis.

LOL! Richard, you do have a sense of humor!

20.. It is assumed that you will type your question in a user
friendly format.

Like not in html!
It is further assumed that you DO know that this is
NOT a teen chat room and that not everyone knows what your
abbreviations stand for.

FROAD.

Nicely put Richard.

Nicely put, and I agree with most of it. But I'm afraid that it
will accomplish next to nothing. Almost nobody who comes to a
newsgroup like one of those he cross-posted to, whether by means
of CDO or by using a newsreader will see it. Most people don't
search for solutions to their problems, let alone for information
like this.

Too bad it is all for naught, unless he reposts it every 5 minutes, and
MS make reading it a prerequisite before being able to post to these

LOL! Yeah, I enjoyed it, but it is wasted on me and the rest of the
regs.

A for effort, C- for effect. And I'm being very generous on the second
mark.

Put it up on a web page, and you can raise the second mark up to a solid
C+. It is wasted as a regular post.

I'm not aware of *any* rules for public newsgroups, which are based on
customs and conventions that have evolved over the years. One of those
customs has been to post in plain text to conserve bandwidth. That custom,
like many other Usenet customs and conventions, has been increasingly
falling by the wayside.

Those of us who've been around Usenet for a while miss the good old days
when everyone knew the customs and respected them. But then, I also miss
bottled milk.

They are not falling by the way-side, they are being abused by the
ignorant masses that don't take the time to learn anything and assume
they are perfectly correct in everything they want to do.

If MS had not provided MS Outlook with Usenet ability Usenet would still
be a great place without the ignorant masses treating it like email
media.

Anywhere near you?

Not really. I live near West Palm. 3/4 of FL, and 3/4 of GA in
between. That's like 1 1/2 states away!
