Arrange icons by name?

G

Guest

Hi, when viewing folders, I like the folders to display the icons in
alphabetical order. Windows XP remembers my settings for each folder.
However, just recently, when I have been viewing files through the browse
window, the icons are not listed in alphabetical order, they are in random
order.

I right click on the browse window, go to "arrange icons by name" and the
files are back in alphabetical order however, when I close the browse window
or go back and then jump forward in the browse window, the files/icons are
arranged randomly again.

I have "remember each folders view settings" ticked in the folder options. I
have also increased the amount of folder views Windows XP can remember. By
default, windows can remember 400 folders, but I have increased this to 1000
but I still have this problem.

Like I said, the icons are arranged by name when I view them normally, but
in the browse window, they are always arranged randomly. What is causing
this? and how would I correct this problem?

thanks for any reply

Restore Sort order in Open and Save dialogs
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_opensaveorder.htm

Or...

To resolve this behavior, reset the default sort order:
1. Right-click Start, click Explore and then click drive C.
2. On the View menu, click Details.
3. Click the Name column to sort items by name, press and hold down the CTRL
key, and then quit Windows Explorer by clicking Close in the upper-right
corner of the screen.
4. Release the CTRL key.
5. Restart your computer.

NOTE: You must perform these steps exactly as they are listed. For example,
do not quit Windows Explorer by clicking Exit on the File menu.
