archive.pst file missing

We have a user who had his AutoArchive turned on for some of his
Outlook 2002 folders. It's set to archive to c:\documents and
settings\[username]\application data\microsoft\outlook\archive.pst.
It's not set to delete anything.

He let AutoArchive run and he said it ran okay without error. Now, he
wants to restore some email. When I look for the archive.pst, it's not
in that folder. I did a search (including all hidden folders and
files) for any archive.pst's and couldn't find one. My question is did
his email get deleted. He has full rights to that directory. If the
archive.pst isn't present, shouldn't AutoArchive error out?

Thanks for any help given.

Should be there. If not Outlook will create it when archiving. Also Outlook
will connect to it and show the Archive folderset in Outlook.

Each folder can have a separate archive file. Perhaps that's true for the
folder in question. Right-click on the folder, choose Properties, and click
the AutoArchive tab to see if there's a different archive file for that
folder. If an archive file doesn't exist at the location you've defined,
Outlook will quietly create a new one, not produce an error.

Thanks for the responses. It's just not there. We checked the path
where the archive.pst was supposed to be for each folder. I searched
for any pst's on c: and even ran a file scavenging program to see if
any pst's were deleted. Didn't find any pst with email in it. I made
sure I could view hidden files and protected system files. It must
have moved the mail somewhere, but the file isn't there.
