Applications start late after double-clicking

Guys, I have been having this problem recently. Whenever I
double-click on any applications such as Internet Explorer, Windows
Explorer, My Network Places etc, they start very late. Internet
Explorer window appears almost after 3-4 minutes after I invoke it,
sometimes even more. Did I uninstall any system files by mistake? :(
If so, is there a way I can bring my system back to normal without
formatting and reloading the OS ? Please please help. Thanks in
advance.
- Raj.

Is anything being logged in either the System or Application event logs when
this happens? Do you see the behavior in Safe Mode? Take a look at Knowledge
Base article 310747 Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System
File Checker (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310747) for a way to check
the versions of Windows files installed on the computer.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. No I do not see this behaviour in SAFE mode.
Applications start as soon as I click on them. I do not know what to
check in the Event logs but I see that an ERROR event is created
(something like "The server {B5AB638F-D76C-415B-A8F2-F3CEAC502212}
did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.") soon after
I click on IE or Windows Explorer. Does this make any sense? Please
help!
Thanks again.

If you have access to a Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 system, copy
Msconfig.exe from it to the Windows 2000 system. Clean boot the system as
detailed in Knowledge Base article 310353 How to perform a clean boot in
Windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310353) and see if the problem
occurs then. If it does not, use process of elimination to determine what
application or service is causing the problem.

Hi Kevin

Thanks for the responses. I tried the msconfig utility to restart the
computer with a clean boot. I follwed all the instructions on the link
that you provided but nothing works. The bahaviour continues. I am
confused as to what to do now. Is the hard formatting the only
solution to this problem?

Thanks

Did you run the System File Checker I mentioned a couple of message earlier?
You mention {B5AB638F-D76C-415B-A8F2-F3CEAC502212} as part of a DCOM error
message you see logged, please search for that string in the Windows
Registry and report back what it states. What roles does this server hold.
One other option might be to run an In-Place Upgrade on the server.
Knowledge Base article 292175 How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows
2000 (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=292175) describes the process, but it
is suggested as a last resort before rebuilding.
