Applications "Not responding"

I am continually having prolems with programs that
are "Not responding" (says the Task Manager). This is
happening no matter how many applications I have going at
once. Is anyone else out there having a problem? Do I have
a virus or worm or something? I don't know how to stop
this. Please help.

Also my computer will not shut down when commanded to

when any program is not responding. Paula

Hard to say what is going on especially if it involves several different apps. To determine a worm or virus, you need to scan for
them. What applications hang?
