Applications closing when needed

am currently attempting to install Norton Internet
Security proffesional. When I run MSCONFIG the
application window closes before I can use it. This also
happens witth Norton's info Wizard.

This is indicative of virus infection. You will need to clean up your
computer before you can install anything. Since you are trying to
install an av program, you apparently don't have one currently
installed. Take the infected machine off the Internet and any lans
immediately. From another computer, download a standalone av program
like Stinger and run it in Safe Mode. You can get Stinger here:

Make a note of the names of any viruses found in case you need to do
further repair work. Once your computer is virus-free, you'll be able
to install NIS.
