Programs stay running in background after closing them!

I have a problem. I am running windows xp service pack 2 with all updates. I
was wondering if anyone knows how to stop my problem from happening.
Everytime I load up windows media player 11 or outlook 2007 or any other
program it stays running in the background if I close it by hitting the red x
in the corner. If I hit file and exit it stays closed. On windows media
player if I am playing something it keeps on playing after I close it. I can
also hit ctrl, alt, delete to end the program left being ran in the
background. This cause problems for me. It really is annoying. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Running right now : Norton Ghost 12, Logitech setpoint, Norton 360, Norton
Antibot, and creative XFI Elite Pro. I have an ECS Nforce 570 Slit-A
mainboard and MSI NX7900 GT/GTO video card. Also A pentium 4 D 3.6 Gighrtz
cpu. Which are all updated fully. Thanks again.

My first instinct is to tell you to get rid of all the Norton cr*p
except possibly Ghost. If that solves the issue, replace Norton security
with either NOD32, Kaspersky, or even Avast if you want a free av. Use
the built-in XP SP2 Windows Firewall, which is adequate for most people.
If you really have the skill to use a third-party firewall, Comodo makes
a free one.

I know 360 isn't the problem. It could be Ghost or the antibot. What backup
program do you recommend instead of ghost? I need a backup software with all
the problems I run into. Thanks for the fast reply.

You don't *know* anything until you've tested properly. Uninstall
everything Norton and see what happens.

If you want to use Norton Ghost, use Norton Ghost. I use Super Duper
since I don't use Windows and suggest either Acronis True Image or
Second Copy to my clients.

I got rid of Norton 360 and also Antibot. I have ghost still running but I am
still getting software running in the background. I could be office 2007
outlook causing the problems. Since the trial is out and keeps asking for a
key. When I check my mail and close it, it stays running in the background.
Sometimes when I hit file then exit it will shutdown correctly. Also I could
be my logitech mx1000 mouse and keyboard combo causing problems. At least for
windows media player. It supposed to show what song I am playing on the lcd
screen. It doesn't work right. That could be a problem. Or maybe even ghost
itself is causing problems. I guess I can try all these things. Also I
installed trend micro pc cliin internet suit. Hopefully this works better
than norton 360. Thanks.
