"applicaiton fatal error. Unable to connect to the ccd process."

I have a friend that keeps getting this
error: "applicaiton fatal error. Unable to connect to the
ccd process." What causes this and how can we fix this???
He thought at one time he had a virus... Also when he
gets "Updates" from Microsoft, his PC doesn't keep them
and it just tries to update the same thing over and over
again.....
