AOL connected but can't browse

Anthony Smith

Good Morning,

I hope everyone is doing GREAT out there! A friend of mine has a laptop with
Windows ME installed and she had AOL ver 7.0 installed with IE5.5 and she
could no longer browse the web but she could do some of the other features
within AOL like sending email. It came up with an error page not found. I
took a look at the machine and did the following:
I tried installing the newest version of AOL - 9.0 but it wouldn't install,
but it did install a new version 7.0a. But I still couldn't browse the web.
I did come up with some kernel32.dll error and found out that was due to
having more than 1 version of aol. So I uninstalled the prev. 7.0 and kept
7.0a on, then repaired IE and still no browsing. Somewhere in there I
installed the new version of IE 6.0 but still no browsing. I did another
check on MS website and aol's site, and I saw something about another .dll
being in multiple locations, (I forget which one), but I did check and only
saw one copy.
Anyone have any ideas? I don't think IE is the problem, I think it's
something with AOL. I personally don't like AOL, this is one of the reasons.
My friend is paying them all types of money per month and they won't help
her get browsing. The one good thing, she is getting a credit for these
months of not browsing. It's been about 4 months and she just gave it to me
this week.

Any ideas? I apologize if I offended anyone at AOL!(smile) Thanks!

Sincerely,
Anthony Smith

Anthony,
I check on Google, and thought that this may help you solving the problem.

When they/you try to browse are they/you getting the following error:

this program has performed an illegal operation

VPPREPOP

If so the solution may be found here, because there might be a conflict with
a program called Viewpoint.exe

http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/t-9359-Aol-90-Vpprepop.html

Another thing, have you tried installing an anti spyware program onto the
PC. I guess you will need to first download the program onto another PC, and
transfer it the affected PC. I use the following?

Ad-Aware SE (free):
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button

Spybot: Search& Destroy (free):
http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html

Microsoft Antispyware (free):
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Make sure after installation that you get all the updates, before running
the checks. If the PC has antivirus program run that too.

If you need to repair your Winsock application, you can use LSP-Fix:

doing her dance she's happy it's working.

Anthony,
Glad it worked out for you.

As a follow-up, AOL9.0 needs IE6.x, so during your attempt to install it,
the AOL CD installed it. Did your friend install version 9.0 or is remaining
with 7.0? They should be able to install 9.0 now. You too have a safe
weekend and wonderful summer.
