I'm assuming you reset the router to go back to the default password to then changed it? - in which case it will go back to default settings.

However I suspect that AOL requires changes from default - one setting on the first screen doesn't look right to me - for instance I'm pretty sure you should have MTU enabled.

You have to set up the router to connect to AOL, therefore you will have to enter your AOL username and password:

What are the essential settings for connecting to AOL? When setting up a router, you will be prompted to enter certain details that govern the type of connection you establish. Depending on the hardware you have, the way in which you enter these details may differ. However, you are likely to be prompted to enter them during the installation of your router and also a wireless adapter, should you choose to use a wireless setup.

Some router installation guides will automatically enter some of these details. Therefore, you may not be prompted for them all. In other cases, the options will be named differently. If you experience problems setting up your chosen home networking solution, you should refer to the documentation included with the device.

Required Details:

Connection Protocol: PPPoE
VPI: 0
VCI: 38
Note that sometimes you will be asked for both figures together (VPI/VCI). In that instance, you enter them separated by a comma: 0,38
Username: (e-mail address removed)
Password: youraolpassword

Please read these important guidelines about Screen Names and passwords used to configure a router to sign on to AOL.

MTU Setting: MTU (Maximum Transfer Unit) defines the largest data packet size you can transmit in one go across a network. The AOL network runs at an MTU of 1450. Many routers have inbuilt auto-configurations where the hardware identifies that the AOL traffic has an MTU of 1450 and dynamically adjusts. Alternatively you may have to manually change the MTU setting on the modem router.

If the router hardware does not have this facility, the MTU setting can manually be changed on the computer to 1450.

You can change the MTU setting on your computer by using DrTCP. This is a free software utility that is a shortcut to editing your registry. This is available at: http://www.broadbandreports.com/drtcp.

MRU Setting: MRU (Maximum Routing Unit) is required by some modem routers and should be set to the same value as the MTU of 1450.

MSS Setting: MSS (Maximum Segment Size) is required by some modem routers and dynamically adjusts the packet size to fit the MTU. It should be set to 1410.

Wireless Settings:
When configuring a wireless router, you may also be prompted for the following:

SSID: This is the 'name' of the router that you are using and is used by wireless adapters when they attempt to establish a connection.
WEP Key: The WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) key is the equivalent of a password on your router. Depending on your setup, it may be necessary to define one of these and ensure that any wireless adapters that connect to the router have the same key in their settings.
Network Type: There are a number of possible choices available here, but, if the option is available, you should choose Base Station.

Yep, thats the place - I can't help you with your username or password, but I assume its the one you use to access your AOL email account etc?

First off just put in your username and leave the pre-filled password there, if it don't work then find your proper AOL password.

I don't have a Linksys router, so the set-up is a bit different to mine - but I suspect under 'service name' you just put AOL?

There are others here that have linksys routers if I remember correctly - so hopefully they can help you out.

You could also try ringing the AOL helpline?

Sorry, been watching a DVD movie ... ;)

You need to contact their tech support to get the correct PPPoE login information.

Another AOHell "customer" had the exact same problem, he was using a Netgear Router. :thumb:

I got the info shown in the attachment at post 3 . I input my (e-mail address removed) and my short password , this mysteriously turns into a long password . I enable MTU save changes and exit .
I can not connect with FF or IE . I can connect to AOL and this then lets me connect with FF and IE . close AOL and I can not connect with FF or IE .
Before I could connect to FF and IE independantly of AOL . Theres a setting thats out somewhere there must be . I got this router of floppybootstomp and it was set to defaults and i must have followed the above procedure to set it . I just can not see where the glitch is . To be fair to AOL the instructions they gave me worked fine before and if I remember correctly I only e-mailed them once for the instructions and they responded quickly .

So what the heck at least I can get on-line with a good connection .

Or can I .

Decided what the heck . Leave AOL on to keep the internet connection and keep the pc running overnight . So I've got Boink running and I'm recoding some .avi files , grand . Off I go to bed .

Wake up . Turn monitor on .

And , (see pic)

WTHF !!!!!!!!!!! No internet connection .

Can only access Linskys with default "admin" password not the one I left it on . Whats going on .

Pc's , stuff em where the sun don't shine .

I'm of to play with me good ol trusty motorbike in the sun .

:p:D:cool:

Well I'll go an suck an egg .

Turned pc of .Then remembered that I had to send an e-mail . Thought I'd re-set the router one last time . Re-set , go to router home page , input same details in same fashion , Bingo .
Now have FF and IE active without having AOL active . So I'm back to where I was yesterday before things went pear shaped .
Question is will me pc run overnight without switching off .
Only time will tell .

i cannot enable my internet connection

hello, everyone. i have been trying to get my computer up and running on the internet, after many wizards i've been through, i've picked up my internet connection from the router, but the connection still says 'disabled'. and when i click 'enable this connection' it takes a long time and just gives up. are there any thoughts on why this is happening? i would really appreciate the help from anyone. just email me at (e-mail address removed)
