Anything more newbie user-friendly than Gimp?

Hi,

I've just installed GIMP, and except for a momentary flash of a DOS
window (dunno wot that was all about) everything went ok.

Until, that is, I tried to use it - basically it seems to be far too
advanced for me and I admit to feeling disconcerted about how
'difficult' it was to access some of my old images (had to enter the
last bit of the paths to folders by hand).

Add to that I couldn't close it down at one stage, along with my
general lack of expertize in most things computer related, I was
wondering if there were any simpler-but-almost-as-good-as-GIMP
freeware paint programs about.

In an earlier (related) thread, Bebop & Rocksteady gave me the
following URL;

http://freeware.quantum.2ya.com/photoeditor.htm

which has a number of freeware programs on it - does anyone have any
recommendations bearing in mind I'm a novice?

Quite frankly, I found GIMP frightening (although I haven't persevered
much - just didn't know how to start!) and although I want to conquer
the world, I was thinking maybe not 'til tomorrow

also I wanna fix the gears on my mountain bike first

and I'll have to ask my mum

Seriously though folks, I'm bacically interested in doing some website
design so if there's any fw paintshoppro-lookalikes that'll meet my
needs then I would appreciate any info!

Regards,

Try Serif PhotoPlus, it's Adware but has a similar front end to paint shop
pro:

If you have a firewall, you can stop it from calling home

You could try ArcSoft PhotoStudio 2.0 SE.
You can get it here
http://atlantic.photoisland.com/photosharing/pstudiotrial.html

But I think if you play around with the Gimp a little, you'l get the
hang of it and like it.

Did you download the Stable Version of The Gimp or the Developers
Version. (Stable Version is about 7MB and the Developers Version is
about 11MB) The smaller (Stable Version) is the better one in my opinion.

Pixia - http://www.tacmi.co.jp/pixia/ (English version halfway down
the page, nice image filtering effects)
ImageForge - http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_imffw.html (quite good for
everyday editing jobs)

Neither is intimidating, and both are more graphic-oriented.

Try (clipped), it's Adware but has a similar front end to paint shop

I don't use the program, so I don't know for sure if it is or isn't
adware. However, ad/spyware is off topic here. If it is ad/spyware,
please refrain from recommending it here since this group is supposed
to be only for the discussion of freeware.

Thankyou to everyone who replied to the above post! :)

I've downloaded and tried a number of the suggestions people have made
both in this thread & in another ("Best freeware alternative to Paint
Shop Pro?" dunno how to link with it) and am currently persevering
with Pixia although I might give Image Forge a try too.

Gimp & Photoplus are too difficult for someone of my capabilities to
learn easily - particularly as I'm also trying to get up to speed on
other non-graphic programs. And I can always come back to them later!

Thanks again!

" I'm using Windows 95/98, and when I run The Gimp, a console window (MS-
DOS box) opens and displays some warnings. If I close this window, The Gimp
closes, too. What should I do?
# Minimize the window and ignore it, as most of the warnings it displays
are harmless, and The Gimp will still work. The only way to get rid of this
window completely is to upgrade to NT-based Windows."
From FAQ on download page (www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/)

| FYI - may cause stability problems under 2k/XP.

Not sure what that would be. We use both on several 2000 and XP
machines with never a problem.

To open a file in Gimp using Windows is just like opening a WP or any other
type file. Open Gimp. Upper left corner File, click it and a drop down box
appears. Select New, then a rectangular white box/screen appears relating
to size. For learning, just accept the one it defatults to. That is like a
blank page onto which you insert a photo, draw a picture, write text, etc.
Just like this blank page I'm typing onto. After you have your blank page,
then what do you want to do? Insert a photo? Then go get it, and copy it
to your page and start editing, twisting, turning, etc. I think Gimp is
more difficult to download and install than it is to operate. Mostly it's
self-explanatory, but downloading it and installing it are the challenges.

For the record, I suspect that wasn't really necessary. It certainly
isn't in GIMP/*nix, but having not run it in Windows, I can't give any
specific advice on how to open a file.

No, that's creating a file. The discussion was about opening a file.

And learn to quote context. You used to do it. Try real hard. You can
do it again.

Well, maybe not.
