Freeware JPeg Optimizers?

J

John Latter

Hi,

Are there any freeware jpeg optimisers other than those found in
graphics programs (I'm currently learning to use PhotoPlus6 &
Vicman).

I downloaded JPEG Optimizer from a third party source and have only
just found out its trialware - I like the feature of
'super-compressing' areas which are a single colour.

Also, I'm looking for a compressor which doesn't have any restrictions
(ie can be used for personal or commercial purposes).

Thanks in advance,

There is a Brasilian program called
JPGReduce ver 1.3
http://thiago.nt.sites.uol.com.br/jpegreduce/setup.exe
612 kb large setup file
The program is in Portuguese,
but easy to understand (at least I thought so :)

I haven't used this program because I have a commercial one that does
the job well, but you might want to try Formati 11 at Jan's Freeware site:

Could be wrong, but I was unable to find the license restriction you
want to avoid.

I have an older freeware version of The JPEG Wizard and would be more than
happy to up it or mail it for you if you wish.

Yes please Dud! :)

My email address is a valid one but I'm not sure if msn allow large
attachments - if you substitute aol for msn then that'll get thru
fine.

This -may- be of interest (current and last freeware version of The Jpeg
Wizard)

http://www.clubic.com/t/fiche2123.html

I tried downloading it but ended up with the 3.4mb later shareware
version - at the moment I'm downloading a 2mb version from

http://www.kreideholen.de/f_grafik.htm

(hopefully Dud will email if this doesn't work!)

Well I give up - the 2mb download was shareware as well & the opening
screens looked identical to the 3.4mb/later version.

It's all up to Dud now!

Thanks John, it certainly sounds a useful program - I'm downloading it
now & will try it out later when I have more time!

Hi John,

When this is all over, you will clearly be the freeware-jpeg-optimizer guru!

Please post your observations and conclusions in this thread :)!!

And expose my complete inability to make any sense of the programs
while others can?

There goes go newsgroup credibility.. 'sigh'

Seriously though, I would have to play with the programs a lot more to
make any observations which didn't run the risk of inadvertently
being misleading.

On the other hand, I am learning so if I do reach a degree of
confidence (er, I mean 'when I reach') based on more than first
impressions then I might post some thoughts - under a different name
of course :)

But as a related aside, I continue to take pleasure in how helpful
people in this newsgroup are!

Don't be fooled................... we don't know anything either. Our
opinions are worth what they cost.

Well, o.k. How about this:

1. Which of the numerous downloads mentioned are actually freeware.
2. If you take the same "dirty" jpeg, and clean it with each of the
legitimately freeware optimizers, how do the results compare in: size, and
appearance (your personal opinion).

Okey-doke Roger - but at the moment all I'm doing is downloading the
programs, having a brief look at them, and then carrying on with other
aspects of the project(s) I'm involved in.

I'm going to be using these programs 'in earnest' over the next coupla
months and now that I'm aware of your suggestion I'll make some notes.

I did begin writing some first impressions but because I couldn't
remember for sure which program I used to do what I deleted it.

OK, I'll undelete some of it - I have an initial 'suspicion' (in the
sense of it being more vague than an impression) that the compression
algorithms in freeware graphics programs such as Vicman's Photo Editor
& PhotoPlus6 may already be good enough - at least for my purposes
anyway.

As I said, now I'm ware of your suggestion I'll pay more attention to
what I'm doing - I would certainly be pleased to give something back
to the newsgroup which might be of use to others.
