hi,

whenever I do a search from explorer in vista (i.e. typing in the top
right hand corner of the explorer window), it seems to bring up
results from the recycle bin at the top of the list and i have to
scroll down to see the results i wanted

is there any way to stop it searching in the recycle bin? most of the
time i don't want to search there at all

Hello Andy

The way to exclude the recycle bin is to start your search in a location
that excludes it. For example, if I start a search from C:\ or E:\ or my
user name folder , I get no results from the recycle bin. If I start a
search from the "Everywhere" or "Indexed Locations", then I see results
from the bin. So search by drive or by folder instead.

You have control over the sort order of results in Explorer. You can use
the column headers to force a different sort. For example, an ascending
sort by the Folder heading will usually put the bin results near the
bottom of the list.

Hmm, if I search in C:, results from the recycle bin are definitely
appearing

for instance, a file called fred.pdf that was deleted from the desktop
will appear in the search results with the filename "c:\users\andy
\desktop\fred.pdf" with the path "c:\$recycle.bin\Recycle bin\
$RHKLKF6.pdf"

I was using "show hidden files" in explorer and i thought that might
be the problem, but i have just turned this off and restarted explorer
and it's still showing them :-(

note that I am not using the index at all - not sure if that makes any
difference

It does make a difference. My examples were based on the assumption that
indexing was enabled. I suggest using it as it's one of the best features
of Vista. Just make sure that you have upgraded to Vista SP1 and Windows
Desktop Search 4. WDS Version 3 (supplied with Vista) had problems.

Otherwise, try adding logic to your queries. For example:

ext:bak -folder:recycle

will find files with *.bak extension but not in the recycle bin.

Do you always store files in the recycle bin? When I throw files away, I
empty the recycle bin. Then it won't be a problem.

Why is your recycle bin between you ears?

Empty the recycle bin before searching
-or-
(for the brave-hearted) stop using the recycle bin completely.
