Any network printer wizards about?

At work we have about 20 PC's sharing 1 network printer/copier

After an external administrator came in yesterday and installed some new
(unrelated) software none of us can print to the network printer except 1 PC

I have tried rebooting the printer 3 times, rebooting my PC 3 times -
deleted/re-added the printer 3 times

The only PC that still works refers to totally a different printer "name" to
everyone else (i suspect he's changed the printer name)

Is there anyway I can add the printer by typing in absolute settings instead
of letting XP "find" a printer that it clearly cant connect to

Yes i realise that I should get I.T. dept back in to sort it out, but they
wont be able to come back for another few weeks

What is the printer connected to, a workstation or a server? You can try
adding a printer, pick network printer, pick the 2nd option, connect to this
printer, and enter \\printservername\printername (substituting the
appropriate names), then click next and see if the PC's find it.

A lot depends on what make/model of printer it is and how it is
connected to the network (directly / using print server / connected to
another computer).

Assuming it is directly connected and has its own IP address, try going
to the Control Panel -> Printers -> Add Printer
When it asks if it is a Local or Network printer, choose "Local"
(counterintuitive)
On the next screen, choose "Create a Port" and the Type of port is
"Standard TCP/IP"
This will bring up another wizard that will ask for the IP address of
the printer.
Continue through this dialog and see if it helps.

What type of software? You need to know that a lot of Windows
software can change a setting / file that "might" affect another
software.

How do I find out the IP address of the printer - so i know what address to
type in - or would it detect it?

Printers will allow you to print a configuration page which will list the IP
address and other info. How you get that page depends on the printer
mfg/model. The instructions will be in the manual.

Cheers I'll give that method a try tomorrow - I seem to remember few years
back when we had similar issue, the I.T. guy said it was a problem with
automatic/conflicting IP addressing so he set a fixed IP address - we have
couple other things on the network so it could be the same problem

Ping it by its name and ping will return with its IP address.
