I saw a strange thing about the update of Antivir in 2 different computers
(Xp pro on each of them) : first of them said of the new version 7, going to
update the old version, the second found only a new VDF and updated only it.

This computer still works with a 6.xx.xx version of Antivir . . . how to
explain this ?

No major problems so far. The first day the servers were hit hard and I
was unable to get 7.0 def updates. No problems since.

I'm brand new to AntiVir and am disappointed that I'm having a problem
connecting to their servers. When I can't connect, after about 40 sec.
the updater automatically switches to another server. That process
goes on for some minutes until the update completes or automatically
aborts.

To get an update, I've tried several times during the day. About three
out of four times, the server is busy and I can't connect.

Ironically, the reason I'm testing AntiVir is that my former antivirus
utility had too many busy servers and non-connects. :)

Another separate annoyance for me in the update window is that when I
press the button, Abort, or the X (close window) button, the window
does not close immediately. It takes about 30 sec before it closes.
I've never had that happen in any other program.

Plus, I don't like that I can't get updates without the Scheduler loaded.
I have most of the popular AV apps installed (so that I can offer tech
support over the phone and see the same thing that the other person is
seeing), but only load the memory resident and email scanning features of
the AV app that I use to protect my machine.

With all the other AV apps, except AntiVir 7 I can place a shortcut to the
update program on my desktop and update the virus definitions without having
to load the program. I used to be able to do it in version 6.x.

I don't know why the author of AntiVir changed this in version 7.

I tried to keep version 6.x, but the update program kept insisting on
upgrading to version 7.

The 2 big annoyances for me are 1) the stupid nag screen trying to sell
you the Premium Upgrade, and 2) I can only connect to the update servers
during certain hours (I'm in the U.S. here). This prevents me from
scheduling update checks every 4 hours for example. And the nag screen
forces me to run a software firewall to block it. Both situations are
irritating.

Re: your item 2)

It didn't occur to me that the servers might be disabled to the US
during certain hours. I haven't made it point to note exactly my
non-connect hours, but they are around 8am-11am, Pacific time.

Does that time correspond to your hours?

Yes, I believe that they are blocking connections from the US during
certain hours. I am Pacific Time here (L.A.). It used to be I could
update any time from about 12 noon till 12 midnight here. Now I'm
noticing I can't get thru at noon but 4pm seems ok so far. Also noticed
that I could get thru at 3am the other day. So the time frame seems to
have shifted. But I would say that their servers are only available to
me for about 12 hours or so per day. Also noticed from my firewall logs
that the new AntiVir 7 tried 4 or 5 servers, but all were dead, so this
leads me to believe they are indeed blocking certain regions in certain
time periods. And although their servers are supposed to have been
overloaded recently with the release of version 7, I have noticed this
phenomenon of limited time availability before with version 6 as well,
for quite some time now. It seems most likely that they limit access by
region to certain hours to help regulate the load on their update server
(s).

Forget those updates ... I will delete the whole thing right now!

It slows down my PC in an most unacceptable way.

Ever since I installed that "engine no.7", I suffer frozen programs
(Opera 8.51 and Forté Agent 3.1) and dropouts that last up to 3 minutes.

(and hey, this is a 3,2 GHz system!!!).

Strange things going on with the new Antivir, it still doesn't show me
any nagscreens, I have no trouble updating and it runs very smooth on my
300MHz, 128Mb RAM system. YMMV

You are indeed fortunate! :)

I've been testing AntiVir7 (my first installation of AntiVir) and
yesterday deleted it from my system. Guess what? My computer had
slowed down to molasses and various programs froze up! I figured the
only thing different was the installation of AntiVir. After I
uninstalled it, everything was back to normal.

Now, onward to testing Avast!

Was this slowdown present with AntiVir 7 only, or was it also present with
AntiVir 6? Maybe this is one case where the old version is better than the
new version if the old version does not cause the same problem.

I had used the old versions (all of them!) for years. There were some
troubles with the download of the updates, but never a slow down of
my PCs.
I installed the new version twice... after the first install I went back
to version no. 6 ( 6.33...) but with the next viruslist upgrade I was
"forced" to reinstall AntiVir 7 ... and the slowdown returned! This did
not only happen to me but to my wife and a freind whom I helped to
uninstall the new versions right now, too ...

I heard in one of the forums that they have stopped forcing the auto
update from version 6 to 7 due to user complaints. So perhaps it's
possible to install 6 again and keep it now. I can't verify this
myself, but it might be worth a try if you are still wanting to use
version 6.

Thanks for that information - I might consider that idea ... (hoping
that the older version is still somewhere around {last week I got
it from Major Geeks, they may still have it})... but I first must be
sure that it won't get overwritten a second time :-)

Something is wrong with your system, I'm running AntiVir 7 and working
extremely well.

Odd. I have it here on a heavily-used machine and it is almost
imperceptible, even though I run CPU-intensive applications like
Prime95.
