Can someone please help.... Im trying to upgrade my sons
PC to XP problem arrises with Voyager ASDL modem and
Epson printer which both work fine using previous ME.
Sypmtons are both not reconised devices in USB after
install..Ive tried pre-installing service pack 1 before
loading but no avail...Even spent 30 mins on the phone to
BT and they couldnt sort it..There doesnt appear to be
any software upgrades to voyager modem as BT claim there
are no XP issues....Is there a way of forcing the
installs in XP??

Are the devices picked up in device manager as unknown or other devices if
so you can select there to update the driver by right clicking and selecting
update driver

Does the 'canot install' message include 'data unknown'? If so, the
problem is with permissions; see:

Since upgrading to Windows XP, have you installed the chipset drivers?
USB will not work until these drivers are loaded. XP will not work with
the ones that existed from Win ME. Do any of your other USB devices
work and it is just those two?

I only have 2 USB devices...
As for chip set...no idea had the board changed couple of
years ago, didnt get any driver etc...
If your sure thats the problem I'll open the case and
find the model...

Try this. I used it to solve an unknown device problem with a USB memory
key.

1 - Start XP in safe mode, by pressing F8 repeatedly while the computer is
booting. Then select "Safe Mode" from the top of the list and press Enter.

2 - Go to Control Panel > System > Hardware >Device Manager. Select View,
and then show hidden devices. Select Storage Volumes (should be near the
bottom) then right click on (any) Generic Volume(s) and click "uninstall".
Do this repeatedly until they no longer uninstall. Do the same for any other
USB devices (leave the USB controllers section until last).

3 - Then go to the USB controllers section and uninstall everything that can
be found there. Don't worry, they will be re-detected on re-boot. When they
are all gone, re-boot the computer. The computer will detect your USB ports
and re-install them. It will probably ask you to re-start after this, but if
it does not, do it anyway.

4 - Plug in your USB device(s) and cross your fingers.

You can use a program such as Everest Home from www.lavalys.com to find
out information about your computer. It will also give you links to the
drivers and updates at the bottom of each section. Try that and check
what chipset you are using and use the link provided to download the
latest chipset drivers or post the chipset in here ;)
