Broadband on a laptop

MIKE C

I have just purchased a Fujitsu Siemens laptop Lifebook
C1020. I have installed broadband software to run a BT
Voyager 100 modem which is external and draws its power
from the USB port. Unfortunately this does not maintain
its conection with the net which forces a system shutdown
everytime.
It has been suggested to me that there may be a MS update
that would resolve this but I have been unable to find it.
The OS is windows xp pro.
Can anyone help.

Thanks

Mike

Though this is a new pc have you checked winupdate?
Also the Fujitsu site for specific drivers/bios updates
Doesnt maintain connection - not an RPC error is it?

Hi Dave
Thanks for the suggestions - tried Fujitsu Siemens they
have no specific drivers other than those installed. Win
update assures me that the current files are right up to
date.
The report that comes up when it crashes is a fatal error -
connection broken unexpectedly.
Still looking
Thanks

Mike

I'm assuming this modem functioned OK on a diff. pc?
You might also want to speak with Fujitsu, some usb 'chips/drivers' are
apparently problomatical
Any xp log to refer to?

Disconnecting from the network shouldn't cause a system shutdown. Sounds
like faulty software or a problematic modem.

A quick google search tells me that the C1020 has built-in ethernet.

If that's correct, you should be able to plug a CAT5 ethernet cable
from your laptop the modem or other equipment that your broadband
supplier gives provided . XP can do PPPoE, just fine, if required.

Is there someing I'm missing ?

This does sound like one of the RPC viruses. Did you hook up to
broadband before you installed antivirus software ?

Check you system for viruses, then get all the critical updates
from update.microsoft.com. You might have to reinstall your OS.

Take your laptop to someplace that will let you plug into their
LAN via your built-in ethernet interface. If your machine
still shuts down it's not a USB problem.

Does it shut down even when you are plugged into house power ?
Then it's not a USB problem.
