Annoying pop-ups on taskbar-msn messenger et al

Me again. On the taskbar in the bottom right corner I keep getting the most
annoying pop-ups and cannot find a way to turn them off. I have a wireless
connection and every time there is a change in the signal (every few seconds)
a pop-up appears telling me what the signal strength is. Other pop-ups also
appear, such as announcing things about MSN messenger status that my daughter
(who may be signed on as another user) is using.
Also, when my daughter is signed on with msn messenger, her contacts keep
popping up and 'talking' to me when I'm signed on. I try signing out, doing
"appear offline" etc. etc. but nothing seems to work. Can anyone help??
Thanks!

Rt-click on the Messenger icon near the clock & click 'exit'.
That will shut Messenger down (as long as you don't plan on using it for
your session) & it will reappear on the next bootup anyway.

Thanks. But when I do this, it tells me I can't exit without closing Outlook
and Explorer first. And when I exit those, the messenger icon disappears, so
I can't exit it anyway.
