Annoying error message.

Does anyone else get this? Every time I click on "Control Panel" in "My
Computer" this message pops up, word for word, complete with mis-spellings
etc. Is it a software glitch or a piece of malware?

"Error
---------------------------
To enable the advanced sound effect for gaming, please make sure the setting
of Hardware Acceleration is "full". The directory is as below: Control Panel
-> Multimedia(Win98)/Sound & Multimedia(Win200, Me)/Sound & Audio
Device(WinXP) -> Audio -> Playback/Advance... -> Performance -> Hardware
Acceleration."

I'd really love to get rid of it, because it pops up about ten times before
I can finally clear it and gain access to Control Panel.

Hi Fitzbugglit,

That error message is probably caused by the control panel applet for the
Realtek AC97 Audio Sound Effect Manager.
If you have a separate sound card installed, in addition to the AC97 onboard
sound controller, either disable the onboard sound controller in Device
Manager or rename the ALSNDMGR.CPL file in the Windows\System32 folder to
something like ALSNDMGRCPL.OLD
If you do not have a separate sound card installed, try updating the drivers
for the onboard sound controller.......if there are updated drivers, they
should be available for d/load from the motherboard manufacturer's website.

Thank you so much,
I was convinced that some evil Trojan had me in its grip. I've updated the
driver and all is well again. Brilliant!

Hi, I have the same annoying message and I am an amateur - can you advise me how I can find out details of motherboard manufacturer to get download.
Where do I look to check for the information you mention in the proposed fix ?

Thanks,
PK
