Can Someone Please Help???

Everytime I atttempt to open the Control Panel on my Windows XP Home Edition,
I, for some unknown reason, get a box popping up all the time instructing me
that,

"ERROR! To enable the advanced sound effectfor gaming, please make sure the
setting of Hardware Acceleration is 'full'. The directory is as below:
Control Panel -> Multimedia(Win98)/Sound & Multimedia(Win200,Me)/Sound &
Audio Device(Win XP) -> Audio -> Playback/Advance... -> Performance ->
Hardware Acceleration."

It also has an "Okay" button to press to remove the box. But no matter how
many times I press this "Okay" button, it keeps on returning until the
Control Panel has fully started up.

I have attempted to follow these instructions, but nothing I do removes, or
makes any difference to the Hardware Accelerator, or removes this annoying
pop-up box.

I am also unable to start up my Windows Firewall anymore either. Whenever I
attempt to start it up it now says that,

"Windows Firewall. Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display
Windows Firewall settings.",

with the same "Okay" button to remove this message.

My mate told me that he could try and help me to check my system by using
the Remote Assistance programme. But my system will not allow me to start
this programme up for him to connect to me for some reason when it used to
work before.

I have tried to check my system for any kind of virus using McAfee
Virusscan, but it comes back all clear. I have also tried to do a system
check with Windows Registry Report Pro, but again no problems were found to
remove these problems.

The only things I have downloaded, that I know of, is the recommended,
"Windows Updates", that I recieve from Windows.

Does anyone know how I have managed to get these problems, and also know of
any fixes that can help me to repair my system, and without advicing me to
reformat and then reload an entire new Windows XP system???

That error message is probably caused by the control panel applet for the
Realtek AC97 Audio Sound Effect Manager.
If you have a separate sound card installed, in addition to the AC97 onboard
sound controller, either disable the onboard sound controller in Device
Manager or rename the ALSNDMGR.CPL file in the Windows\System32 folder to
something like ALSNDMGRCPL.OLD
If you do not have a separate sound card installed, try updating the drivers
for the onboard sound controller.......if there are updated drivers, they
should be available for d/load from the motherboard manufacturer's website.

If using Realtek AC'97, try the latest drivers.

Thank you very much for your advice and suggestions.

I will definately follow both of your advices, and find these downloads
immediately, if not sooner.

Thank you
