Annoying clicking noise

I have a DELL notebook without a mouse and just the touch pad. For some
unknown reason it continues to annoyingly make a clicking noise as if someone
is hitting the clicker, even without someone being at the computer.
Suggestions?

Search for: *.wav

Start | Run <type in>
sndrec32
<enter>

Drag and drop each wav file into the Sound Recorder program, when you
find the clicking sound - delete it.

That will get rid of the sound file, but not the reason for the repeated
clicking. Internet Explorer makes a clicking sound when downloading Web
page data. TRW probably has a program that is downloading Web data in
hidden windows. This is standard behavior for some kinds of
spyware/adware programs, so TRW should do a scan for those. I recommend
Lavasoft AdAware, but many people prefer Spybot Search & Destroy (make
sure you get the genuine SS&D from <http://www.safer-networking.org/>).

In particular, it has recently been reported that the NaviPromo malware
causes clicking noises. The OP should scan his/her computer thoroughly.
The NaviPromo malware is particularly difficult to get rid of and will
require running HijackThis and posting the log to a specialty forum
(*not* here in the MS newsgroups).

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Include scanning with either Sysclean or Multi_AV, plus AVG Anti-Spyware
(formerly Ewido - http://www.ewido.net/en/). Do all prep/finishing work
and follow instructions to do all scans in Safe Mode.

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the link above (not here, please).

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA). Please be
aware that not all local shops are skilled at removing malware and even
if they are, your computer may be so infested that Windows will need to
be clean-installed. Have all your data backed up before you take the
machine into a shop.

Thanks for the help, I took care of some spybot and cleaned up some spyware
problems, but still had the clicking. I then went through the sounds, speech
etc on my computer and discovered it was the "start navigation" sound and
turned it to none. This is much better, however is this a problem that this
was continuing to come on?
