Randon Noise

Hi There,
My machine has started making an occasional "dunk" noise, a bit like when
you try to do something the computer doesn't like.
Everything seems to be working ok although I have recently changed the hard
drive but it was doing it before that.
I've checked the event viewer and nothing is reported at the time of the
noise. I do have windows search errors and DCOM errors but not at the time
of the noise.
Can anywone help please?
I've got a 4.6ghz machine with 2 gb of ram, dual processor and run XPSP3.
Also are the DCOM and search errors an issue I should address?
Thanks in advance.

Check for any virus / spywares on your system. Some type of
application can be "secretly" installed.

Also, the "dunk" noise can be a "device" disconnecting from Device
Manager (aka Safely Remove Device -- USB devices ????)

Go to the Sound applet in Control Panel and play each sound file for
each sound event. Report back when you match up the sound you hear with
the sound event.

Start looking at what processes are running on your host. You could try
rebooting into Windows Safe mode and see if the ghostly dunking noise
reoccurs. If not, use msconfig to disable all startup items and boot
into normal mode to see if the dunking noise occurs. If not, reenable
one program at a time, reboot, and see if the noise occurs.

Thanks for that and I found that the sound is for a "Critical Stop" I guess
I'll try the process outlined by VanguardLH

Did you look in Task Manager's tab to see if any iexplore.exe processes
are listed even though you see no windows for Internet Explorer? It is
possible to run a process that uses a hidden window (the visible
attribute is off). The program is running but its window is not
visible. Could be you have malware that is loading IE to make
connections but hiding that it is using IE to make that connection.

Hi There,

Ok, it looks like its to do with Outlook and Corel Wordperfect.

When I try and do a search in outlook I get a message that indexing has not
been completed.

So I went to indexing options and got an error that Borland Database Engine
is not installed and also something about the Corel address book.

I think but not usre that I don't get the noise when outlook is not on.

Does this make any sense to you?

SUCCESS!!!

It's solved thanks for your help.

To cut a long story short, I went to Control Panel, then Mail, then Data
Files, then Address Book and there I found both an Outlook Address Book and a
Corel Address Book. I have never used a Corel address book so I deleted it
and that solve the problem with no more errors or nasty loud sounds.

Thanks again for your help

Gday all

When i boot my PC a warning sound starts not long after i boot, it is a
constant noise,
"beee baaa beee baaa" to spell it!?

it's almost like a warning noise or something to tell me something is going
wrong...

I just would love to know how to turn it off....I've googled a fair bit but
can't find a solution...

Kind regards,
Onkel

Perhaps your PC has an over temperature alarm that is set to low. If the
sound starts BEFORE Windows loads, call the tech support of the company
that built the PC.

Hi There,

I am by no means an expert but:

- The noise sounds like from the BIOS as the machine starts up. If you
have the manual for the motherboard then it will describe what the various
noises mean.

- If you don't know what your motherboards is D/L the free "Belarc Advisor"
which will tell you what it is. Then go find a manual from the manufacturer.

- There are also lots of web sites which will tell you what BIOS sounds mean.

- I would take out all connections in the machine and clean them (I use
crumpled up white paper) and make sure they go back in firmly.

- Check the CPU and see if there is a lot of dust on the heat exchanger
under the fan. If there is, remove the fan, normally 4 screws and vacuum off
the dust on the heat exchanger under.

Hope this helps but there are many more on this site which can help you
better.

Also, best start a new question rather than piggy back of anothers.

Cheers
Buster
