HDD Activity after reboot

Hello. I have a Pentium D 2.8, 1Gb Ram, MB Asus, HDD SATA Samsung
80Gb, and windows XP Pro, from a moment to another, the HDD activity
became my worst nightmare. 2 minutes after I login, the hdd activity
increases a lot, and whole system bacames very slow. I've run defrag,
scandisk (no errors/bad sector detected), I also deleted all temporary
files, I updated Bios for the last version and nothing...It is very
slow. I also tried to hear the HDD for strange noises, but all the HDD
noises activity seems normal to me. I don't know what else to do. Is
there any virus/worm that can causes that? Any help will be thankfull.

You need to find the specific process or application that's causing the hard
disk
activity.

To do this try Process Explorer:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:
In the taskbar select View and check 'Show Process Tree' and 'Show Lower
Pane' options.
(This will provide the detailed info you need)
Next click on the CPU column to sort processes by %CPU usage.
Then click on the process that's using most or all the CPU % (when the hard
disk is active),
once it's highlighted, right click and from the options listed select:
google
This should display what out there on the web about that process.

Note: some entries like Explorer and svchost may need to be expanded to show
the detail,
(sub processes), in this case click on the + located to the left on the
entry.

Could be an Windows automatic update or some other program. Strange noises
such as a high-pitched whine or grinding is not good and is a symptom of a
mechanical problem with the drive. As such I recommend having a local tech
check it out while you can still recover your data.

You can download one of these programs which will show you what processes
are running on your PC.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Processesandthreadsutilities.mspx

The Process Monitor program has real time updates for both processes and
registry activity as well. The Process Explorer is similar. It will also
allow you to stop and running process. I recommend you read the information
on the site about each program before you use it.

Something is running in the background that you're unaware of.

What are your anti-virus settings?

Is your computer set to index everything? (DUMB).

There are more questions, but those two will do nicely for now.

I'd run a spyware check

also run msconfig and take all unneeded apps out of startup...
it's possible all you may need there is your virus checker and firewall

There are many, many possibilities/reasons for the hard disk running so much
(also sometimes called thrashing). Here are a few of them, just as food for
thought, below. I noticed someone mentioned using a process explorer in
another answer: That was good advice, too. My suspicions though are that
you've picked up a virus or other malware or, worst case, your machine has
been infected with a zombie malware and some spammer is using your machine
to send out spams. You should not have any internet activity indicated when
you aren't surfing or sending emails; pretty easy to check out.

Reasons for excessinve disk activity:
-- Antivirus software is set to do a scan at each boot.
-- AV (antifivirus sw) is set to scan whenever the machine is idle.
-- Indexing is working (default). Indexing can be turned off. It has its
advantages and disadvantages: If you don't know the difference, you can
likely do without it.
-- Other malware scanners are scheduled to run at boot up.
-- A virus, trojan, worm, etc. (malware) is at work and may or may not be
pushing data out to the internet from your machine.

For protection:
-- At least a software firewall like ZoneAlarm free or Pro.
-- Antivirus software. AVG is a good freebie. There are several good
ones; avoid the no-names.
-- Spyware detectors, at least three of them. Adaware from lavasoft.com,
Spybot Search & Destroy from spybot.com, and Windows Defender from MS come
to mind. WinPatrol is a great monitor tool too.
-- ALL of the above updated often.
-- Look up "safe surfing" in a search engine and practice it.
