OK, I've had enough......

I have Windows Vista Ultimate x64 running on...

Pentium D 3.2GHz
2Gb 533MHz RAM
C: drive is 160Gb Seagate 7200RPM 8Mb cache
D: drive is 400Gb Seagate 7200RPM 16Mb cache
256Mb nVidia 7300LE graphics
Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic Soundcard

I don't consider this a "slow" system, but the excessive harddrive activity
on first boot (the C: drive only contains Vista itself and Office 2007) is
concerning me as slows the system down and prevents you from doing anything
for about 3 minutes (I know that doesn't sound long, but this never happened
with 32bit XP Pro, which I'm comparing to)....

What is causing the HDD activity and resulting noise and slowing of my
system and can I stop it without unduly impacting on whatever it is doing??!

Go to Start Orb, type Reliability and Performance Monitor | enter. In the
right pane expand the disk and CPU sections. See what is reading / writing
to the disk (click on a column header to sort by Writes, for example) and by
PID see what processes are responsible for it.

How long have you had Vista installed? It takes a while for Vista to get
everything indexed. After a fresh install of Vista I leave the computer on
(with sleep disabled) overnight. Once the indexing is up to date it's impact
is minimal.

Super fetch and indexing services are known to run often on a fresh install,
just disable them!

Activity seems high on alot of programs and services in the Reliabilty and
Performance Monitor.....

I think it could be system restore and the pagefile causing most of the disk
usage?

Incidentally how do you turn off indexing?

Once the drive is indexed the performance hit is negligible. The search
feature is one of the nicest new features in Vista.

You go to services, and you will find the one to disable.

I did it, and now the system is much faster, with a lower memory impact

Incidentally how do you turn off indexing?

Open My Computer and right click on the drive, click on properties and
uncheck index this drive, it will take a bit of time for the attributes to
get changed..
