XP keeps making noises

Lately, XP has been making annoying noises. You know
the sound XP makes when the Windows Update balloon
appears, the sort of quiet 'pop'? My computer is now
making that noise about once a minute, and for no
apparent reason. My XP is up to date, so that is not an
issue. Does anyone have any ideas?
