grinding noise with windows update

Since installing XP Service Pack 2, I now hear a brief grinding noise from my
computer (hard drive?) every now and then. From a GoBack log, it appears
that this noise may be associated with Windows update checking if any new
updates are available. Is this a serious problem? Does anyone know a
solution?

You probably got a fan that's going bad. Files on your hard drive
don't cause grinding noises.
