annoying "cannot modify registry" errors when installing programs

Sometimes, but not always, when installing programs - depending on how
complex they are - I get a "cannot modify registry, installation aborted"
message, and the installation fails. I'm logged in as admin, I have full
control, but I still get this error. I've tried changing compatibility mode
for the Setup program, but it still gets the error. The event viewer logs
show nothing on this, either.

Currently I'm having this issue with the program Lightwave 9 (3D modelling
app, and yes it's a legit purchased copy not warez). I've emailed Newtek
(its makers) but while waiting for a response I was wondering if you guys
had any ideas on what could cause this error.

I'm using XP SP1 and just four of the most recently released critical
patches (I can already hear you MS dudes howling with depair at that, but
the reasons I stopped updating are many fold which I won't go into here).
And yes I do know MS will be ceasing SP1 support soon, so I'll have to get
SP2 or 3 sooner or later, which I'm dreading. :P

Are you using Zone Alarm?
What version?

ZoneAlarm Security Suite 6.5.737.000. I've just as this minute turned off
"Program control" and attempted to install, this time it installed first
time. Maybe there was something in ZA blocking it. Thanks for the heads-up,
I didn't really consider ZA was behind it.
