Animated text disappears too soon

I am trying to animate a bulleted list, which is all within one text box. In
the past, I could ask Powerpoint to animate "by first level paragraphs". This
would show the first entry, then the 2nd entry on the next click and so on.

I find that this works in the new version (I have 2003) BUT when the next
line comes up, the previous one disappears. It seems to treat each item in
the bulleted list as a completely separate animation.

Can anyone tell me how to keep the preceeding lines visible?

Click on the drop down arrow next to the animation item and click on Effect
Options, set after animation to Don't Dim. Also, make sure you haven't set
exit or emphasis animations that's making the text disappear.
