Help. The animated do that used to appear when I clicked
on the Search button on the tool bar is gone. Where did
he go and how can I get him back?

My guess is that you need to turn on the office assistant in one of the
Microsoft Office applications, like Word. It's on the help menu in MS Word.

Helen--

Try scrolling down in Search>Change Preferences>Click>With A Different
Character and see if you can select Rover again. I first got Rover>then
some kind of Houndog which seemed to go away about the time I used SP2 and
now Rover is one of the animated bit map choices again. If you click the
dog you can get him to do a few tricks and the other characters have some
moves.

Nah, that particular annoying little pup is a "feature"
of XP, it has nothing at all to do with Office.

If you REALLY want him/her back:

in Explorer>>View>>Explorer Bar>>(check) Search

then Change Preferences>>With an Animated Screen Character

Yeah, you're right. But it's the same dog. Microsoft Agent provides the
dog(or cat or other avatar). You can actually download other characters from
places like: http://chemware.co.nz/AgentSupport.htm#DList if it rings your
bell.

There's even a web ring for Microsoft Agent:

But don't you feel just a *little* bit
guilty when you click the "Don't use
animated.." checkbox, and he keeps smiling
with his tounge hanging out, gallops away
and disappears?

As a dog owner, I admit I do. The
damn thing is just so damn...well, cheery.

But the feeling doesn't last long ;-)
and I can always reach around and pet
the *real* dog under the desk.

Clippy kidnapped him. That bastard!

You want him BACK? I was willing to pay good money to have him "offed".

[Ok, serious reply: I think you are nuts, but install TweakUI for
Windows XP, and within Tweakui is an option to "Use Classical Search",
turn it OFF (uncheck it). Actually, there are two options, one for
Windows, one for Internet Explorer.]

Barry--I'm going to mess a little with Tweak UI, but it's sort of trivia
curiosity, first with XP RTM you had this dog they called Rover (orange),
and then I got a dog I liked better that looked like a hound dog (yellow),
and then I got the first animated bit map back. Do you know what could
cause the bit map switch? I'm using SP2 but I don't think it changed
because of SP2, I think it changed during SP1 but it could have been an SP2
build months ago.

Thanks,

Chad Harris

I HATE that dog. It is a prime example of what is wrong with MS. He serves
no function except to take a tiny bit of your computers power and memory.
Iff they would strrrip all that kind of stuff from XP it would me a much
better system.

And yes, I do know the doh can be turned off, but does the average user know
this. He should be off by default but able to be enabled if someone wants
him.

Every time I think about that dog I think "MS, is this really the kind of
service your users want from you.

And remember MS Bob? They have a history of that kind of stuff. BRRRRRR,,,,

1. If you're not using the search function the dog is NOT using any
processing power.

2. If you turn him off, he will NEVER use any processing power.

Surely, you must have more pressing issues!

Somehow, I don't think that wasted resources are the issue.

I'll bet the poster doesn't call his car "Matilda" either.

I always thought they should have called him Microsoft Bill. You
know, as a sort of homage.

The dog reminds me about a few of the MVPs around here. Everytime they
open their mouths in these groups, all they can do is bark praise of
Micro$oft.

I remember MSFT Bob. And like other aspects of Windows 3.1 it still exists
in a sense in Windows XP--Rover is one way. The project was one managed by
Melinda French. Now she is Melinda Gates and I think Bill Gates remembers
Microsoft Bob.
